• Barbells and Dumbells, Quick! Which brand?

I`m thinking of buying a set of barbells and dumbells. Mainly for Squats and lunges. Just wondering if it matters which type of brand I get. Does it matter? Does it have to be a certain brand like York (is that right?) or something ? This one on the magazine says this:

" *WEIDER (it`s the brand I think) 50 KG/110 LB. WEIGHT SET IS MADE IN CANADA.

Six 15-lb. and two 10-lb. vinyl-coated plates, a 5' long hollow steel bar, sleeve, 2 each: plastic collar with locking wrench, 15" plastic 'spinlock' dumbell bars, 'spinlock' plastic collars.

'blah blah blah blah............................$ 59.99"

I`m 14 years of age and was wondering if it will stunt my growth. I belong in a gym that has a weight area and I can also ask for support there. So I`m just wondering if this set is any good or worth my money to buy. And was wondering if Thai Boxers do any squats and such, and why if not.

i cant really comment of the price, or quality of that wieght set...
you can always do squats without wieghts...lol.
No working out at a young age will not stunt your growth...though it can screw up your posture lol, if you dont strech enough that is.

haha

though it can screw up your posture
Man how do you do a proper quote where it says who wrote it !? Screw up your posture, give me descriptions LoL, that sounds funny. With no weights, will you still benefit anything ? Cause I`ve done some lunges before and didn`t really notice any differences with my legs. Same image, same strength. I do 3 sets of 15 each leg. What do you guys suggests on the # of sets and reps? on the 3rd set, I do feel discomfort. After I rest, it`s the next day i`m at the gym, were kicking shields, I don`t notice any difference.

For squats, I never actually done them. Actually I have, once and this is what I did :P

I got a mop, and two chars. I put the two chairs on each side and did the squats, i stopped because it didn`t work well. And I was not taught with proper form either so I didn`t bother. I did it for the fun.

under the post there are little icons you can click, click the one that says "quote" or just type [ i ]originally posted buy... (dont leave the spave for the first . )

the posture? those guys who spend to much time on the bench press....there shoulders protrude forward a bit, makes em look like cave men lol. Thats realy just because there lazy....you also get those guys who spend to much time on the computer, there necks get a funny curve in em, they look kinda like a turtle when wearing a backpack lol. i would also try to stay flexible...some muscle bound monkeys are so bulky they dont have the same freedom of movement ( thats also why most women can hyper-extend there arms moreso then most men, because our biceps are bigger).

Okay well it doesn't matter what you lift they will all work.

However if you are going to lift for a long time and want something that is going to last get steel or cast iron weights. They last forever. Cement weights have a tendency to break if dropped.

I went to thrift stores and ended up with a couple hundred pounds of weights, cast iron for about 20 cents a pound on average.

Just remember that weights are great but you have to move them. If you ever move you want to make sure that you are able to take them with you. You wouldn't want to spend the extra on cast iron just to dump them off later because you can't afford to move them.

Proper form should be used when lifting and you should have a spotter especially at your age or you are asking to end up with an injury.

lol. ya, at least i think....just make an effort to correct your posture, sit strate. I think it happens most when people move their head forward to look at the screen, if you sit reasonably strate it shouldn't be to bad.....i think.
