Wanna get in shape? eat right no crap food like chips soda fast food so on, watch your carbs try to eat only as much as you need for energy, cut sugar down. AND EXERCISE, running is great in summer or wherevever it is hot, cardio workouts work but the best I ve seen work is jsut plaining good old runnign with lots and lots of sweating.
If you're doing an activity that is rhythmical, uses large muscle groups and is repetitive at an intensity of 60-90% of your max. heart rate for at least 20 continuous minutes it doesn't matter what activity you select.
Some arts are better suited for improving your fitness level however. I can't imagine getting my heart rate to 90% of max for 20 minutes doing Tai Chi!!
All you need is love........and a sharp blade.....a hardwood flat stick......Oh, oh, oh and a Paraordinance lda 14.45 loaded with 230 grain hydra shocks, ranger SXT's or golden sabres
You wanna get into shape? Join a competitive road bicycling club.
Been there, done that! You are absolutely correct sir. Talk about insane workouts, I would also add competitive rowing (collegiate and Olympic) to the list. Where's the bucket? Don't think it's that hard? Try jumping on a Concept II Rowing Ergometer for 20 minutes at a good clip (without stopping or slowing way down).
Yah, William. I used to race criterium cat 3 back about 20 years ago. Best cardio workout I ever got: 6 hours of cardio/anaerobics per day. I would like to have the time to do that now. There is no way you could take that much pounding if you tried to get that kind of cardio in running.

Alright Terry!!!
I used to race cat 3 as well. Crits were also my favorite. My size and strength really made me more of a "one day" racer (though I could climb quite well for someone my size). Stage races more than 3 days long just took too much out of me. My teammates called me a pseudo sprinter. I didn't have that jack-rabbit quickness, but I had the power to mash the big gears from a long way out. I'd run a 53x11 with 180mm cranks. Most sprinters would wait till about 250 - 200 meters before they wound up. I'd start winding up around 400 (take the punch out of their legs). People would jump on and start sucking my wheel but by the time we got to the line I had built up so much speed that most of the time they couldn't come around. Didn't work all time, but I won enough to call it a fairly successful strategy.
I too wish I had the time to get into that kind of training again. Many a day I look at my steed and think, "you know, I'm going to get on the bike and start training again". Then I look at the thermometer outside and see it's about 4 degrees outside with a negative wind chill....screw it! Wait, I could dig out the rollers (my wife won't appreciate burn marks in the carpet again). The only time I was in better all-around shape was when I was rowing competitively.
I don't understand what you guys are talking about. How do you race cats?
Want to get in shape? Try this. I just did this, and, holy shit, I collapsed on the bed, and coudn't get up for 20 minutes
Jog 1 lap (1 lap is approx. 1 mile it's any distance that takes you 10 min to complete)
Woodchop (medicine ball) 10 reps
jog 1 lap
haybaler 8 reps
jog 1 lap
squat jump 6 reps
make sure you don't collapse on the side walk. I suggest placing the medicine ball right in front of your house, for obvious reasons.
