If the Bill Phillips thing works out I may start taking my son with me to the gym. At 12 years old he is 5'10" tall and weighs a smooth 180lbs. So this leads to another question:

      How old should kids be before they start working out and what type of program is safe?

      Have you considered getting your son into football or wrestling? You wouldn't have to take him to a gym (save $) and he would probably get body weight excercises from the coach to build his strength. Who knows, he could grow to be a 6'4" 250 lb defensive lineman or another Alexander Karelin of wrestling.

        re: Tom Yms reply

        Hi Tom;

        I haven't figured out how to do quotes on this site yet so this relates to the last post. My son would love to play football (I played 11 seasons and even played for a pathetic excuse for a semi pro league here in Canada). But being in a small town there is neither Football (the exception is the $17k/year private school) or wrestling (until high school - he's only just finished grade 6). I do have him in karate. I also just learned that through the TKD school in town a guy comes in Saturday morning and teaches traditional JiuJitsu so I will probably sign him up for that (and myself as well). The problem is that the kids that get huge early (he's not fat) have a hard time getting the muscles formed and they often have bad leg coordination and strength. So I am hoping to work on those areas now. I don't think of it as an edge though - more just enough training that he can enjoy being a boy without being the totally uncoordinated geek of the pack.
        Thanks;
