  • Weight reduction diet? enough protein?

hey, i would like to loose 20 pounds , i've been told i can go on a vegeterian diet, but i'm concerned that my protein intake will be affected (i work out 2- 3 times a week, and do cardio every day)

Any diet/ cardio that 's affective would be really appreciated,

If you're an active male doing martial arts/weights/etc. I'd suggest staying as far away from all veggie diets as possible. You will not get nearly enough protein and if you supplement with soy protein, it has estrogenic effects and will counteract muscle building.

I definately would not lower the protein intake. Protein helps build lean muscle mass. The more lean muscle mass on your body the more fat you burn.

Supplements are just what they say they are "supplements" and are only really inteded to be supplemented in with a good diet and excercise. For example if I don't have time to sit down and have some chicken I make me a shake so I am supplementing a shake for a meal if I dont' have time. This should not be done all the time and you should try to get as much food protein as possible. You don't need supplements to get bigger or stronger but you do need a healthy diet.

Protein: Meat, fish, beans (the leaner the better for weight reduction)

Fiber: Fruit, vegetables, grains and cereals (be careful here, some things have more fiber than others)

Carb: Pasta, potatoes, rice (these are essential when you are excercising a lot)

Here's a good site with some more detailed information on a balanced nutritional program.

I think the food labelling in Canada is similar to that in the US so that can be helpful in determining how much of each you are getting. It's more difficult with things like fruits and vegetable that do not have nutrition labels. There are websites that should give you that kind of info.

I would recommend a veggie diet if you wanted to lose 20 lbs. You could supplement with Whey Protein Isolate if you were very concerned about your protein intake. For a veggie diet to work you need to research it a little more than simply eating salads. Beans, rice and vegetable combinations should all be present for the protein/amino acid intake to be at it's best. I am a martial artist and about 90% vegetarian. I still have fish or chicken once or twice a week. I'm healthy and fit and I actually moved up a weight division in the past year by supplementing with whey/soy protein and creatine, so I gained 11 pounds. As a martial artist I feel it is fine to be a vegetarian, though not for everyone. Most martial monks were vegetarian including Shaolin and Wudang. Whatever way you choose to go, keep an open mind when it comes to veggie.

                          Peace
