Running is always a legitimate option, as well as first priority. only an idiot trying to play superhero stays to try and take any kind of weapon from someone when the option to disengage exists. It is also always a good idea to leave an opening for the attacker to disengage if they so chose. My point about attacking was in reference to a siutaion where you are FORCED to defend yourself. For instance: you are cornered, your girlfriend is in the bathroom and she is not aware of your situation, you have a child with you, you could not outrun your assailant (for any nuimber of reasons), etc. Knife defense (especially empty handed) is always a last resort. When the sh!t hits the fan, however, offense is what wins. It's been proven time and again.

congrats Kingston / ryhanhall u win runrunrunrunrun.
thats the best advice ive herd yet . i asked if anyone trains with real knives .
the satament "that will sort em out " is to find out what people think of a real knife in training . me i think its great it puts a bit of caution on every teq because you have no choice but to execuite your teq with out any mistake .
of corse this is verry difrent to fighting in the street & fighting someone on drugs . amesage to all who have replied . if someone comes at you with a knife & says "give me your money" give it up it's a pain in the bum but better it be a pain in the bum than a kinfe in the back.
To those that are going to say what if your being raped then sorry the act has begun . all i can say is FIGHT FOR ALL YOUR WORTH .
To thoes that will say {what if , yeah but what if ,yeah but what if this} i only have this to say grow up . if we lived on the what if we wouldent be hear

GUYS Thanx for your imput .
"respect all fighters no matter size, color, race, religon, style, rank.

We use the Applegate/Fairbairn rubber replicas, and are currently looking into the "no-lie blades", which have a magic-marker type surface along both edges and the tip. Wearing a white tee shirt, you can then engage in a knife drill and see exactly how and where each participant was cut or stabbed. Once the funds are raised, they offer a training set of two blades and coloring sticks (like lipstick) for the blade edges. www.nolieblades.com

These are recommended by the Vunaks and many other highly respected knife instructors.

By the way, I agree with the "run if you can" technique!

Good choice. Those are solid trainers.

              To Dannyjian:
I wouldn't train with live blades just on principle. Too much can go wrong if you train realistically for the use of real blades to be anywhere near safe. I wouldn't want to do it even if my "opponent" started with the weapon in plain sight. I might slip, be too slow, misjudge, etc. As for training realistically (hidden weapon that the bad guy deploys at an unknown time), it would be downright deadly. Even a good knife defense can fail, and having random weapon deployment ups that chance infinitely. If it were safe to train with real blades, they wouldn't be so dangerous to run into in outside of training. Think of it like this: someone runs their hand across your neck by accident when they flail after you palm heel them. Unarmed, you're ok and they're out. Knife? You're dead because your carotid artery was just severed.

With that kind of danger existing, no sane training partner would come at you full force with intent--they may soon be without a training partner themselves. Give them a plastic or rubber trainer, and they'll try to gut you like a fish. The final pitfall is that when you are faced with a knifer, your intent has to be to terminate them NOW. Even if your good buddy doesn't stab you, how are you going to train the kill? Gonna axe hand him in the throat after controlling the weapon? I hope not. In closing, live blade training doesn't separate the men from the boys, it's Darwinism at work. The idiots do it, and they'll probably die sooner rather than later. It's like playing Russian Roulette.
