  • How often do you train?

Sorry if this is in the wrong forum!

Anyway, I was just wondering how much training most people do per month, per week, or something like that.

Usually, I try to do a bit of training every night, but sometimes I'm just too tired I don't do much in the line of sparring, either, since the only people I know that do kung fu are about 10

When you ask this question do you mean Martial Arts or weight training or physical conditioning?

Exactly what jcolvin said. If your talking about ma training it depends on your goals. Do you want to be a world class fighter? Or just maintain what you have? If you want to get into the ring as a serious fighter then train 6 days a week. If just for fitness 3-4 days a week(no less than three). It really depends on what you want to do. Theres much more to this of course how you train is very important. Also your trainer needs to be competent. Give more details.

Probably more martial arts training itself, rather than the other two (even though they are important), and maybe just maintaining current knowledge.

3 days a week, having each practice being over 1 hour. That should be enough for keeping your skill as well as improving it at a steady rate.....(just my personal opinion). you could always go to more, but i think for your situation 3 is fine (your not going for any tournaments or grading)

it also depends on the difficulty of the class. the less intensive it is, the more you should go to.

I train twice a week - 2 hours per session. On top of that, I go to the gym three times a week.

And I attend the classes listed on the school schedule, as well as, some additional heavy bag training at home. I also have a weight training routine (5 days a week) and supplement cardio exercise routine (2 days a week).

The reason I train like that is because it clears my head and relaxes me.

I run 3-4 times per week, and do strength training and/or bag work 3-4 times per week.

                  I work on Muay Thai 3-4x/wk, Brazilian Jiu-jitsu 2x/wk and Kali once/wk.

I used to do much more B-J-J, and feel that one hour twice a week is barely enough to maintain my skills - saying nothing about improvement. My kali skills won't be getting any attention from Dan Inosanto any time soon, needless to say.

MA about 4 times a week (depending on the rota for work), cardio and weights in the gym 3 times and a dance class for good measure (the excuse being it helps my footwork - Lol!)

                          Training

I train everyday, doing something... Sunday-Saturday.

Cardio I try to do it at least 4-5 x a week. Running, swimming, roping, some type of machine, mostly the eliptic runner.

Weight or strength training 3-4 x a week.

                          Martial Arts Everyday...

                          Bag work 3-4 x a week.

                          Pad Drills 3 x a week.

                          Trapping 2 x a week.

                          Kali/Silat 6 x 7 days a week.

                          Grappling 4-5 days a week.

A lot of my training blends together for example:

A lot of it depends if someone is there to train, and if there is then that is the type of training done. If not, hvy bag, mok jong, grappling dummy speed bag, double end bag etc...

So...if I were grappling with someone say 45 mins to an hour then there is a lot of cardio done, so if I wanted more cardio then I may only run 2 miles or do 23 mins on the stair stepper etc...but if I were doing more instruction type grappling were I was showing or being shown something then practicing it, then I would run 3 or 4 miles or go longer in something. I try to do Kali Silat everyday, because that includes almost everything, a lot of trapping, footwork, moving, grappling, hand and foot strikes, and of course weapons.

                          Hope this helps....

I have two routines. Call them A and B. They are designed to compliment each other.

                            A = 5 x 3 minute rounds of striking practice
                            Weightlifting for the neck/grip
                            An intensive anaerobic circuit and
                            Stretching.

                            B = 5 x 3 minute rounds of striking practice
A full body weight training routine and
                            Stretching

Week 1, I do routine A, B then A again. Week 2, I do B, A and then B again. This goes on and on. I change it around if I get bored. I used to train lots of goroundwork, but became stale and bored. I think that only a tiny percentage of it was relevant to the way I fight (assuming, and escaping from, dominant positions. I'd prefer to ground and pound if on the floor, rather than fancy submissions).

I try to only train in ways that directly help me become better at defending myself. So, no kata, no running, no semi contact sparring, no competition tactics and strategies, no bull shit.

My style doesn't lend itself easily to sparring. Firstly I think it becomes too stylised anyway, and can become harmful. Secondly the Thai type stuff (which I do rate for self defence, of course) is too rough on my elderly body. Thirdly none of the techniques I practice are legal in competition/sparring anyway. Fourthly, I have extensive sparring experience from the past, but still reckon I'm more able to do the business now than I have ever before been in my life.

Me and a like minded guy from another site are to team up and exchange ideas soon. Maybe that will allow me to broaden my scope a bit.

I like your idea of the A and B, wondering if you do any grappling?
