I was doing some thinking lately and watching some boxing movies and have seen a pattern. Those who seem to suceed seem to have something to fight for, whether its fighting out of the ghetto or for some girl or to win glory for something or somebody. I couldnt really think of why i box, i just love it, im only 15, but i still cant explain why i box. I have people always asking why I go into a ring and get my head beat in and get arthrites, possible brain damage, why would i even allow myself the possibilty to get punched. Why do you fight, what dream or goal or fire drives you to get up and run in the morning to feel tired and after a long day of work, and go to the gym? Why do you box?

Like dkm (which I dont know what that means) I box to be the best n strongest, but now its more for pride, to help my family in the future n so everyone can know my boxing gym. Peolpe will come all over the world just to train in that gym. Besides barely anyone respect the art of boxing anymore so I'll show them that boxing is still strong even though our style is limited by not kicking.

Pride, thrill, personal betterment, physical and mental challenge, discipline, proving those who say 'you can't' wrong etc... Too many reasons.
Besides, who out there can say they don't want to be the best they can be. Handle tougher and tougher challenges. Always push your limit to see what you are made of?

why
i fight when I have to. To defend myself family or loved ones. Since my art relies om maiming at the very least my opponet I don't fight for thrill or fun or money or to impress friends or girls.

Aside from the obvious physical and mental challenges to overcome, and a case of pride, I think fighting brings out who you really are. To paraphrase the words of the infamous "Iron" Mike Tyson, "Everbody has a plan until they get punched in the mouth". I think this can be said about a person's character - everyone has a "plan", that is, an idea of who they want to be or how they want to be seen. It's only when you step into that ring with a warrior's mentality does your true character show.

Why?
Been boxing for a few years now; recently out of the gym during the summer because of work, but I still train now and then with a range of fighters from ranked amateurs to beginners.
Why box?
Its an interesting sport. Can't think of another sport that somewhat prepares you for combat, keeps you in great shape, makes you forget about your day (if its a bad one), challenges your thinking and builds comradare.
If boxing weren't somewhat decent as a standup method of combat, MMA athletes would have picked wingchun or other fist methods and the big purse winners in K-1 would be kung-fu or TKD fighters.
If you stick with it for a while, it builds tenacity. Its made me a better combatant in my wrestling game too in terms of focus and toughness;
The fitness requirement is awesome; if you train regularly you will slim down to your natural bodyweight, build incredible timing, hand-eye coordination, better balance/movement (if you don't have it naturally) and get ripped.
Most of the people whom I've met in boxing understand the importance of your head game (psyche) and it makes you more confident without having to boast.

A further note...
While boxing gets a black eye from some of the guys who loose their discipline and the media's sensationalism, I'd say that most boxers whom I've met have been down right good people.
I've met lawyers, construction managers, engineers and even folks training to be in seminary whom have picked up the sweet science. The outside world still laughs at the boxer stereotype - a washed up Rocky Balboa and there may be a some truth, but I've sparred at alot of different gyms and have been met mostly by fellas with a b@lls to the wall work ethic and great hearts.
At the competitive level I can see there's more psyche going into it and head games - but in the gym its nothing but blood, sweat and tears.

That's the distance you'd have to move your pinky in order to not sound like an idiot. I know the burden of pressing shift to capitalize is a great one, but c'mon, you can do better than that. I used to type emails in caps like yours, but then I decided that I didn't want a job mixing concrete.

because there is truth in conflict
plus you get to beat on people your own size and you don't got to jail
