Hitting hard while moving backward is more a function of your opponent's forward momentum than anything. Strictly speaking, no one, and I mean absolutely no one, hits as hard going backward as they do going forward (assuming the target is in front of them). Ali used to knock guys down while moving away from them, but that is somewhat illusory. He may have been moving backward when he did it, but the reason it worked is because he got his opponents to move in at a rapid pace and then he himself slowed down. In effect, they were closing the distance faster than he was opeining it. Relatively speaking, if the opponent is closing on you faster than you're moving away, there's still forward momentum. If you have and keep good balance while moving, you can get your arms into a punch going backward. Timed well, that's all you need to do damage, especially bare knuckle.
My father was really good at this. He used to say if you time it right all you have to do is hold your fist out and they will knock themselves out.
*sigh*, I wish people would stop looking at martial arts as an answer to self defense. Most physical confrontations are avoidable, it's like trying to figure out the safest place in a plane crash. The safest place is not on the plane!

Reason: hit send on accident
Medic your very right about the powers issue, no one can hit as hard going backwards as they do moving forward. In my case the guy was running into my first, he as so hell bent (and drunk) on getting his hands on me that he kept running into my first.

Then why do you belong to a martial arts message board full of martial arts enthusiast? It's like an Boozer frequenting AA meetings. You Dont make sense. We all love martial arts and love self defense, that's why we log in everyday to discuss. It's a way of life.

Martial arts and self defense are not the same thing.
Nope, I just understand that self defense is a process that includes a whole lot more than martial skill. Like my seatbelts and airbags I'm glad to have my martial skill but hope I never have to use it in a real life situation.

11. Defense against western boxing - Boxing
1. Choking and choke escapes - BJJ <---I agree
2. Escapes from guard and mount positions as well as submission reversals - BJJ <---I agree
3. Locking techniques for arrest and controlling - BJJ, Judo <---I disagree. Judo and BJJ may have armbars and leglocks on the ground, but they do not have arrest and control techniques like walk-alongs and such.
4. Strategic footwork and why - Boxing, Judo <----For sports, yes. For self defense, absolutely not. Boxings footwork would make a fight into a bout. And Judo's footwork is for kuzushi, and sometimes take a while before anyone can get offensive.
5. Throws, rolls and falls - Judo <---I agree
6. Pain tolerance - Boxing <---I agree to a point, but boxing is not the only art that fits this category.
7. Blocking system that doesn't require strength, and leaves you in offensive positions. - BJJ, Judo, Boxing <--- You have to be joking, right? Boxing is the only one you wrote that fits here.
8. Weapons and disarms - If your opponent has a weapon and you don't...RUN! This real life isn't hollywood. Unless you have Steve Austin's $6 million dollar legs, you can't always just run. Sometimes, you actually have to know something.
9. Smart Striking - Not macho striking that'll break your fist, toes or shin - BJJ, Judo, Boxing. <---- You have got to be high.
10. Fluidity in striking, locking and throwing(also called flow) - BJJ, Judo, Boxing <--- By your answer here, I'm confident that you have no idea what flow is.
11. Defense against western boxing - Boxing <--- Good answer
I agree with you mike on the punching, you hit the average man with a good body shot on the street they are going think they just got hit by a make truck. They are going to give up the fight idea and go looking for an Oxygen tank!

I like to break the floating ribs; but of course, I take street fighting with strangers very serious.
Are you one of those people who walks around with a $20 bill hanging out of your pocket in hopes that someone will try to mug you????
Nope, not at all..I'm just unfortunate to live in a statistically ruff region of the country. Per Capita, we have more Homicides and other violent crimes than anyone. It almost makes you paranoid; but being a Black Belt helps to calm your nerves down. New York, it ain't Kansas.
P.S. Before you criticize my Black Belt statement let me just say that I train with a large variety of weapons.
does it really matter here how many he's broken? ....arent we discussing boxing as a martial art? heres a story for ya....2 weeks ago 3 policeman tried to arrest a man here in town who pretty well known and a nice guy( small town) . anyway he was down on his luck and pretty drunk i guess that nite and an altercation took place between him and the cops ....well he knocked 2 of them out cold and put the other in the hospital with broken ribs and a concussion! he's in jail now of course and will be for a while and actually lucky he wasnt shot for it. they didnt realize he was a golden gloves about 4 years ago and underestimated him. heres one of my fav stories......about heavyweight champion of the world Jack Dempsey .......i guess he was in his 70's at this time when one nite 2 would be muggers attempted to mug him when the old champ threw 2 punches and knocked both of them out ....at 70 years old!!! boxing works and works well and heres why.....yes the skills and conditioning play a huge part of it for sure but i think its the inherent toughness and instinct that it develops. so i guess when one thinks about it ...its not so much the style of martial art thats better but the quality of fighter it produces. not the size of the dog in the fight but the size of fight in the dog......
