Just started seaching and found this board, great stuff. Anyhow, I haven't done anything with boxing in a long time (and at that time it was just the basics).

However, I've been lifting weights and bodybuilding (lil stuff) for the past 5 years. What I would like to know is what type of training do you guys recommend for speed? I've got a pretty solid punch, however its not real fast. Also, I live in an apartment and would like to get a training bag? What would be good? Could I use a heavy bag in the corner?

    Thanks for the time...

My friend is a local amateur boxer, he said heavy bag is good for spped and strength but the only real problem with that is if your going for speed, rythmn, and accuracy. The havy bag is so big its hard to miss..he suggested what he called a "speed bag" (i dont know what the real term is) but they asre the little ball shaped punching bags that go back and forth when you hgit them, this will help you develop speed and rythmn. he also suggested shadowq boxing......

    hope that helps..

i know this may sound simple, but practice practice practice. The more natural the movement is to your body, the faster it will be. Definitely use the speed bag. Some people use wrist weights to help it out, though I have never done this and would recommend being very careful about it. As for the heavybag, look into a standing bag such as those made by century. My top recommendation.......join a gym.

        binski,
I wanted to join a gym and have no problem doing so, however of the 6 gyms here (5) won't let me train for "fun" and the other (1) keeps its price high. I'm still looking for something. In the meantime, I'm checking out the century product, thanks for the time.

That's too bad. Our gym allows people to train for fitness, fun or competition. Some take things pretty seriously, and there is some reason for it. There is alot of work that goes into it by the fighters and the trainers. I don't think they should just turn people down though, but hey I don't own a gym. If you can't join one then I 'll give you what help I can. Look into some books or videos and really practice and perfect your technique.

I don't recall anything about fighting skills. There is SO MUCH to learn about proper boxing skills that we could not even begin to discuss it here.
