    Definitely yellow bamboo!

My favorite boxin' techniques are the wide-swingin' haymaker, 4-combo rabbit punch and the bolo to tha groin'...jj.

It is doubtful whether or not this contest will really settle the controversy between boxing and judo. There will always be those who will say "if" this or that had happened the result would have been different. But perhaps this is the way it should be between the adherents of the two great sports. What was settled on December 2, 1963 was that a ranking professional boxer lost to a ranking judoka under rules which gave each contestant the best possible advantages for the use of his techniques.

There are details in Gene's autobiography that are missing from this version. Like the brass knuckles that the boxer had under his glove. The petrolium jelly on his Gi....that it was the first ever televised MMA fight in the USA. The fans screaming "KILL HIM" the ref taking his sweet time to declare Gene the winner and that the boxer was out for almost 20 minutes! (And never had another pro fight...)

      Recently reprinted in Grappling magazine...

What I thought was really cool is how Gene brought theatrics from his pro-wrestling experience into his press conference for that bout.

Just imagine, if he promoted mixed matches then where we would be today

The next style vs. style matchup was the Ali vs. Inoki match up. Inoki was forbidden to get a clinch or to latch onto Ali's legs (There goes his ability to get Ali to play his game!)

So he threw low drop kicks at Ali's thighs for several rounds, then stayed on his side while trying to scissor Ali. Ali tried to stomp Inoki's butt... then gave Inoki space to get up.....repeat....LOL

I think Ali ended up with a torn and damaged quadricep and damage knee.

You mean slapping the host of a local TV show in a "sleeper" hold and putting him OUT COLD? LOL

Pick up the May issue of Grappling magazine! It's got the story excerpt from his book in it.

[QUOTE=sherwinc]no doubt....... the Boxing will truely defeat Judo

First off, I cross train in boxing with some professional boxers at their gym, and I am a martial arts instructor. If all they do is that one art/style....
Can a boxer beat a Tae Kwon Doist or Karateka,? YES! I believe so, dare I say with no problem. Can the same boxer beat a Judo Player? Can the judo guy take a punch? If yes, then I will go with the Judo Guy over boxer Dude! Just as tkd and karate guys can't stand toe to toe with the boxer, the boxer cannot fight on the ground with the judo guy. I've seen guys go down with one punch, I've seen small guys flip big guys and submit them. In all I guess what I'm trying to say is, THERE REMAINS SOME DOUBT when you match these two guys up.

Gene was recently awarded his 9th Dan from the Kodokan. May 4th.

What I remember of that Ali fight with the kick boxer is his calf and shin getting hammered for several rounds. I don't think he stood up for a whole minute in any round. On his back like some kinda butt flopping Jiu-jitsu guy then kicking at Ali's calf every time he came close enough!

This would definately work on me (a green belt) but getting low isn't necessarily a good idea against better judokas. Alot of the brown and black belts i spar with love to get you bent over because that puts you under their control. True you aren't going to be able to throw a lot the techniques that most people recognize as judo, but all kinds of new possibilities open up at the same time. Particularly, a low stance opens you to the possibility of the judoka getting an arm over your shoulder at which point you're pretty well screwed.
I'm not making any assertions/predictions on which would win blah blah blah, but i've been thrown by world class judokas and i'm just saying that no simple stance will keep you safe from judo.

                    Cross training

Boxing for stand up, BJJ (Brazilian Jiu Jitsu) on the ground, and wrestling/Judo take downs.

I ended up ducking and giving a hard body shot which stopped it, but at the moment i froze i never had a kick to my head in boxing before. I want my body to be the ultimate fighting machine (UFC style). What would be the best arts to cross train into?
Need to know. What kind of kicks was he throwing that made you dodge all of them?

That's because Tom started a good thread almost THREE years ago... The theme is timeless but maybe you should see if Southpaw is even still posting... Teenagers tend to have short little attention spans.
