    Hey,
Got a question here guys; My friend who does Jujitsu, reckons that some American dude who was a Muay Thai fighter took on 20 Shaolin Monks and beat the crap out of them. Anyone know if this is true?? I really need to know so I can shut him up..... TheMantis

I believe it. I myself can kill thirty grandmasters with just one move called TWIN UZI. Other variations are AK-47, Twin MP-5, and the ultimate -- Gatling Gun.

All jesting aside, I'll believe the guy if he says he took them on one on one, one at a time. Unless he was an exceptional fighter or possessed a firearm, he'd really have trouble taking on multiple opponents.

Don't forget, there are lots of phony "monks" these days too, and many who look very impressive when really they do is contemporary wushu to attract tourists. Like China has lots of fake temples even, to trick Chinese people themselves.

So I mean, just cuz he took on 20 Shaolin monks doesn't mean they were real monks.

I read an article about the training real monks do in regards to fighting, and it said they are very intensive in how they train, basically like muay thai, only it is kung fu.

So I think he is just talking crap.

There's stories like that around everywhere but if you really delve into the situation you'll see where things went different.

Take, for example, O'Sensei Takamatsu, who once was in a newspaper that claimed "13 YEAR OLD JUDO EXPERT TAKES ON 60 OPPONENTS AND WINS." Takamatsu was attacked by a gang of boys once who claimed he was too big for his britches but after Takamatsu started fighting back, 52 of them ran away so he only had 8 left to deal with. Being as they were all young boys like himself, he probably only had to throw a few to the ground before the others decided to give up, but still that shows off a hell of an impressive warrior spirit, someone who decides to fight back against incredible odds.

So you really have to look into the story before you can make any claim official.

                  total bullshit IMO.

There are very few monks around even at Shaolin. If he kicked a bunch of the Shaolin Touring monks in fine - thats like beating up a gymnast!

I know of one occassion where a of Shaolin was approached by a modern fighter who then attacked.

The monk sat there while the other guy punched and kicked him. He was baddly bruised up etc but was otherwise ok. When asked why he did not use his Kung Fu he said ' I did not need to - my body and mind was ready'

He did not fight back because it went against everything he stood for.

Much like the monk who burn himself in protest. That made more of a statement and far more of an impact than fighting his oppression with aggression.

interesting, to be at such a high level of understanding.

                  regards
                  Chris

He didn't fight back, got hits and bruises and yet he won the fight. That's pure spirit strength. He knew what would happen, he knew he could have beaten up the other guy and he stood still. How many would act like that? I don't know who the guy was, but if he was a real monk I really think he could have beaten the other man up.
In the end, it's easy to get carried away by anger and frustration, but it is much harder to remain calm. And as the chinese say, a fight avoided is a fight won.

                        Re:

The Shaolin Temple was dead for a while, even Jet Li himself said when they started filming Shaolin Temple back in the early 70s, they found 3 monks there. The abbott, a cook and a guard. That's all, no more. The temple started to come alive again after the Shaolin movies became popular in China.

Far as a Thai boxer beat up some monks, I believe it if he did it one by one. There was actually a couple of fights in Bangkok, one in 1973 when kung fu fighters arrived from Hong Kong critisizing the Muay Thai and challenging them for a fight. All kung fu fighters were KO-ed in the first round (Muay Thai matches are 5 rounds). The rematch took place on June 22, 1974 in the Hua Mark stadium, in front of 15,000 people where five kung fu expert lined up against five Thai fighters. The Thai boxers in gloves, the Chinese bare handed. All five fights combined together lasted 6 minutes and 22 seconds (1 Muay Thai round = 3 minutes). Again, all kung fu expert where KO-ed in the firts round. The same year three Singaporean kung fu 'masters' arrived to Thailand to restore the kung fu's name. Two in the first round, one in the second round was KO-ed.

Why Muay Thai is so effective? 'Cause they FIGHT. Over and over, again and again. Those forms we learned and repeated over and over in traiditional arts will only give you the basics and will only get you to a certain level but not to the top. There is just no substitution for experience.

I am both a traiditional art and a Muay Thai practitioner.

Fighting is the most reason why thai is so effective, just as TiamPiu said.

I can't explain this very well in english, but i try. Becouse they fight so much, and they "feel pain very much", so next time when they fight, hits does'nt hurt so much. And of course they learn better fighting strategies and those sort of things. If kf fighters, tkd fighters, karate fighters or any other fighters would fight as much, im sure they would manage much much better in fight against thaiboxers.

I agree, that is the main reason why thai boxers win against gong fu fighters.
Add the fact that they start training around 6 and fighting around 12 and you get the picture. Of course there are exceptions, and I believe that in the past gong fu training was much harder than it is today.

                              Agreed.

MT generally will win over the main stream gong fu community in China.

In the background there is definately still a core of traditional Chinese MAists that would give a even the Best MT fighters a serious run for their money, but then generally, glory through combat in a ring is not there goal and they dont care who is 'best'.
