No I have either chosen not to fight or to just knock my opponent out on the street. Sometimes an opponent isn't worthy of my energy sometimes my time sometimes they can be shut down by the power of words.

You ever run across Leon Jay over there? Your profile says you are in England.

              Richard

your history and initial post suggests to me thatyou havent really found what you are looking for?

What are your objectives in training in martial arts?

As for the 4 years needed to learn i remeber when i was starting out i read a book on shaolin kung fu by yang jwing ming, im sure most of us have read it. He sayd in the book that it takes a minimum of ten years to really form a base for an art. When i read this i was about a year into my training and thought that i would be able to learn the art i was practising a lot quicker, however, over twenty years on i find im learning more about my art now than i ever imagined i could.

As for energy levels, well this depends on the way you use your art. Due to a knee injury i cant now do any CV work. But i often spar for more than an hour with Kickboxers and BJJ guys without getting too tired.

Most of the traditional systems work on developing a different way of generating power and the muscle groups required to do that rather than a combat sport such as kickboxer that requires a different physical make up.

This is backed up through sports science and the type of muscle fibres used for each exercise or technique.

              regards

Thank you for your views. When I first started Kung Fu it was about gaining confidence through learnig self defence which was certainly achieved as my Master allowed me when I was very young to freestyle and also be taught by his best Sifu's. I wasn't a disciplined student that would practice for hours every day, but as I was young and loved Bruce Lee movies I was very keen to learn how to fight. That and the fact that I got a bad beating when I was about seven years old. I didn't chose to learn Kung Fu my mum and dad pushed me into it.

I like the fitness that can be gained through regular disciplined training, and I also admired my teachers of old and always aspired to have a presence and charisma as big as theirs. Maybe I was very lucky in a way that I got beaten up as this is how I found Martial Arts. This is probably why I have done it for so long. I actually enjoy teaching and always try to pass on as much of my way as I can in as nice a way possible to all of my students.

It is hard for me to teach part time and work full time, but I hope to open my own school soon where I will be teaching street defence and Shaolin Kung Fu to music.

so how long in total have you trained?

What type of shaolin do you practise and teach?

I was very lucky as when i started out i lived in London and was able to visit lots of different schools. eventually i came across an excellent teacher who not only gave me good skills but also took me across asia and eurpoe. he opened many doors for me as well as all his other students.

Whereabouts in the UK doe you live?
