    Hehehe....

    There's a more obvious answer

    Marine Corps rules for gunfighting...

#21. Be polite. Be professional. But, have a plan to kill everyone you meet.
#22. Be courteous to everyone, friendly to no one.

Off topic... (MARTIAL) of or pertaining to...?

Martial ART:any of various fighting sports or skills, mainly of East Asian origin, such as kung fu, judo, karate, and kendō.

Martial arts can be divided into the armed and unarmed arts. The former include archery, spearmanship, and swordsmanship; the latter, which originated in China, emphasize striking with the feet and hands or grappling. In Japan, traditionally a warrior’s training emphasized archery, swordsmanship, unarmed combat, and swimming in armour. Members of other classes interested in combat concentrated on arts using the staff, everyday work implements (such as thrashing flails, sickles, and knives), and unarmed combat. Perhaps the most versatile practice was ninjutsu, which was developed for military spies in feudal Japan and also included training in disguise, escape, concealment, geography, meteorology, medicine, and explosives. In modern times, derivatives of some of the armed martial arts, such as kendō (fencing) and kyūdō (archery), are practiced as sports. Derivatives of the unarmed forms of combat, such as judo, sumo, karate, and tae kwon do, are practiced, as are self-defense forms, such as aikido, hapkido, and kung fu. Simplified forms of T’ai Chi ch’uan, a Chinese form of unarmed combat, are popular as healthful exercise, quite divorced from martial origins.

      And one from Websters dictionary
      Main Entry:
      martial art
      Function:
      noun
      Date:
      1928

: any of several arts of combat and self defense (as karate and judo) that are widely practiced as sport

      ......
So.... Just where does the ROMAN god of war and agriculture fit into this picture? (Mars)

      Translation glitch?

None of the so called sources listed had any conception of Roman dieitys...

The Shaolin monks weren't so nice either until the emperor decreed Shaolin either teach morality alongside the martial arts or close the temple. Rest assured you'll find far more assholes than nice people in the history of the Martial arts. Take a look at Gun and knife forums and Martial art forums and you'll discover the majority are full of opinionated assholes, not nice people.
Not to drag this out but this is obviously a half-full, half-empty sort of thing. That said, my original instructor was a prince of a guy. And old school Tae Kyon master who once knocked the hell out a mugger late one night after practice with a friend of mine who studied with him. Master Kim, then sat there with that mugger nursing the guy's broken arm. I once spent some time with Dan Inosanto. If ever there was a guy deserving of a Pece Prize just for being, it's him. I have yet to hear or read anyoneoppose this. A judo instructor my uncle used to train with. I spent two summers in his classes - most genuine, caring, patient of people. The legendary Chinese Kung Fu master, Huo Jia Jia, a badass who nevertheless was reputed to have been one of the most benevolent of masters in China's martial known history. The same goes for Uyeshiba, Funakoshi, Yamaguchi, Kano - all known for their humanity.

Jackie Chan has said that one thing he admired about Bruce Lee was that despite his temper and no-nonsense cockiness, during breaks on the set in which Jackie was priveleged to have been a part of ("Fist" and "Enter"), Lee would always sit with the nobodies, the extras and hired hands, not only treating them as equals, but standing up for them. Today, any of them, when recollecting their time with him, say the same thing. Taky Kimura, who's only competition for sainthood is Dan Inosanto (I know, I'm overdoing it) - both speak fondly of the man's kindness.

Come to think of it how many of Lee's original students have a reputation as assholes, or a bad word to say about the guy. Like attracts like. Good luck compiling a list.

Are there, have there been assholes in martial arts? No doubt about it. But that should not reflect on the great people the arts have always been a part of.

Oh, and don't equate the assholes one meest on forums with martial artists. I suspect there are far more keyboard phonies than anything else. That and assholes who were assholes throughout their school years, who go into martial arts already that way. There's this one famous instructor, advertises all over the internet. I mean all over. Used to train with an Uncle of mine, til he tired of his nonsense. Biggest phony, undercover asshole you could ever hope to avoid.

There's good people and assholes in every endeavor, whether it's martial arts or movie theater ticket takers. Whether people are decent or shitty is and always has been a matter of personal conduct and not so much which activities they associate themselves with. I think maybe there's some degree of desire to see what we do in a positive light, and perhaps that drives a lot of people to prop up the accomplishments and attitudes of others as some kind of example for what they themselves participate in. Since the Pope is visiting here, I'll use Catholics as a convenient example. On one side, you've got your John Paul's and your Mother Teresas. On the other side you've got some diocese puttering around with little Johnny's tallywacker in the mop closet at the rectory. All Catholic, but not all good people. Likewise with martial arts. Some great, and some not so great.

Oooo! I just thought of something! This ought to make my critics dry heave a little...

It's almost like when people talk about guns.

Guns are just guns. They're inanimate tools in the hands of people. People, then, decide what use their tools will serve, and it's the people themselves who are good or bad. The result of a good person with a gun is remarkably different from that of a bad person with a gun - but neither one is in the least little bit the fault of the gun. Maybe martial arts is like that? Maybe martial art is just a set of ideas and techniques. Maybe it's just a tool, and the result - the effect of it all - is really just a matter of whether or not the guy doing it is a prick?

              Could be....

Sorry. I know that started to drift. Bottom line is, both TTE and Liberty are right - and wrong. There are innumerable people on both sides of the "dick or not a dick" aisle. Any list you compiled might be factually accurate. Doesn't mean martial arts made them that way, though.
Admit it Mike, all that was just a nice cover so you could use the word "rectory." You are now suspect (once more) - LOL!

I don't think studying the arts makes you less of a nice person, but I do believe that Mother Teresa and would make a poor Martial artists. Nice is a relative term, but most of the nicest people I have met are mortified at the idea of practicing violence. People who enjoy practicing bone breaks or the most efficient way to carve people up make better martial artists than people who would rather be baking a cake. The DESIRE to win or at least survive at any cost is important to making a good Martial Artist, you have to be willing to do more damage to the other guy FIRST and most nice people haven't got that in them.

One key piece of info is missing from the Navy list, before we send a few thousand Marines in, we always send a few sailors to make sure it's safe.

Can I practice bone breaking and cutting, then bake a cake later on?

PS - no unintended reference to Sweeney Todd.

What you use your easybake oven for is up to you, especially if you practice bone breaking and tendon cutting.
