  • Tom Wong Wing Chun -- a different style non Yip Man

Have you guys ever heard of Tom Wong in Los Angeles? I have heard here and there about him throughout the years that he is an excellent teacher.

I never knew how to get a hold of him but apparently he has a website now. I googled it the other day (a luxury that I did not have 10 years ago)

    Wing Chun - ???? - ???? - ??? - Los Angeles - San Gabriel - Orange County

One demo that I found impressive was his one inch punch. i like the second punch the best at 0:15

Is it just me or is Tom Wong a flashback from the Bruce Lee-look-alike auditions in the 1970's? He's even got Bruce's old students vouching for him.

As far as 1-inch punches, I think they're great crowd pleasers, but a bit gimmicky.... I mean, why not 2 or even 3-inch punches? More distance to get power. Honestly though, how many WCers have used 1-inch punches in live competition or combat? I just want to know.

i dont think tom wong looks anything like bruce lee...but he probably thinks you look like every other round eye too haha

i think the one inch punch is supposed to be the ultimate demonstration of short range power. basically saying, all i need is one inch of windup to do this to you. obviosly if he has that much power in one inch he has that or more in 2-3 inches.

often in close quarters fighting you will only have maybe up to 6 inches of distance and no time to wind up.

i dont think its a power demonstration trying to compete with the other power demos you see...maybe of a guy doing an arm windmill and smashing 1000 lbs of ice or other power demos with no limitation on windup

i havent used an exact one inch punch, but i have used a 3-4 inch punch yes, but mine was not very powerful.

in 3 to 4 inches i cannot do what he does

Actually, I was referring to the pictures on his website; that IS Wong right? Or is it Bruce Lee?... So no need to imply any racism.

        Fair enough. Thank you.

no racism implied. thinking someone looks like someone else is not racism.

they both had bushy hair (like most do in the 70s)...i'll give you that!

            Pretty much on point...

It's for use in times when you don't have space to pull back (IE.on the floor with a grappler) This is the kinda punch you're suppose to try and use if any from the ground. Very few have developed explosive short power to the point that It would be effective, if needed.
