Getting back to ngo cho.....
I have been working on the sandbag with tensioning slightly on impact and without, defo find without releases more eneergy...
I was also working with a couple of guys today who fight in Vale Tudo and we were looking at ground work....so many of the techniques are very similar to those found in samchien, we looked at escaping an arm barr and the same escape is found at the closing section of the form...it's a lot harder to work on the ground ( on your back) as you can't 'sink' but still the mechanics are the same...
thoughts?

when woring on the grappling i wa strying to use the techniques as i would on stand up but found without being able to sink my arm it was more important to maintain a good body position...if i allowed him to take the arm there was no escape...it was only possible if and when you can react before the wrist is fully locked with the thumb pointing up...if you can prevent this then you can escape....
four principles, yes i can explain them...do you have an instructor? does he explain them to you?
five elements? again yes i can but really your instructor should...
also it is very hard to explain them in writing without demonstrating and, more importantly, feeling them.........
my undertsanding of the elements is that each one has an energy that comes from and moves in a different direction/way
they come into play in very close in fighting/pushing hands drills that rely on sensitivity and the ability to react to force/energy....
i wouldn't know where to start trying to put it into writing...!
we practice a lot of pushing hands and bridge hand work and try to get guys into understanding the energy rather than the form....i hope that comes across correct?
regards

I would say in NCK the first thing will be to avoid getting into an arm bar trap, becuase as you have said it, once the trapper has set in & lock on to your arm it will be difficult to get out of it unless you are stronger than him. That is why in NCK we train a lot on moving our wrist, arm & forearm around in small circle this movement is design against arm grabbers.
The sequence of action here would look something like turning your wrist & arm in small circle & combining it with punch, kick & tripping. Another way to get out of it is to quickly turn your shoulder & at the same time insert your other free hand or arm into the trap arm acting as a wedge, then move with the flow of the trapper while trying to remove his arm by ( I do I explain this?) both arm pulling away at opposite direction with the free arm that is acting as a wedge sliding against the trappers` arm.( If I have a picture I`ll try posting it in here). Trying to grab his pinky finger maybe a bit difficult becuase the trapper has the full momentum to break your arm or drag you down.

Ground fighting?,
If we are up a against an expereince ground fighter the first thing do is not to fight his way but we fight our way & that is to prevent him from getting us into the ground.
Ground fighters like grapplers are like giant snakes ( python & araconda ), their technique is to get in wrap you up & suck the juice out of you by either breaking a part or your body or thru submission hold that takes away your oxygen. Their weskness is, that they have to expose their back in ordrer to get to you becuase their favorite target are the legs & they love diving down to get to it.
In sam chien, the part where we execute the double low guard with one foot ( the lead leg) in the kicking position. This motion is ideal against grapplers trying to come in low. The two arm is position like a crane wing but instead of up it is down. Grabbing or blocking the incoming two arm of the grappler & simoultaneously half step back one leg & with the lead leg kick to the face. Then, in a low stance, one hand hold on to the back of the head to guide it away from you so that his momentum will off line, execute either a powerful knife hand or iron fist punch into either the back of his head or neck area.

Yeah , done that several times.....they do still get you down though...got to remeber they or at least the guys i train with are as good at what they do as we hope to be at what we do and i feel it's important to know how other arts work in order to make ours defendable against them. There are times when a ground fighter will dominate and will get you to the ground. If you are not prepared fort his then then will take control.
I think it's very important to know how to deal with all types of art?
If nothing else it makes you work harder NOT to get taken down!
I also fight with guys from wing chun, kickboxing and karate...
all good fun though!

Very true one way to test a technique is to spar with different type of MA people.
I myself have spar & competed in a mix martial art before ( when I was 19- 35 yr old ), & I was very happy & satify with my techniques against other form of fighters.
Lets start with grapplers, footwork is very important we must be able to adjust & space ourselves agianst them. And at the same possess a good power punch or kick that will really stunt or hurt them or else as you have said they will just keep coming at you.
And if they do get in, footwork again, spread those legs, move those hips, shoulders & body don`t get into a ground fight with them slip out fast or else we`er doom.
That is why many grapplers now are incorporating punching & kicking into their training so that they can use it to distract a stand up fighter with it while waiting for an opportunity to dived in & execute their ground fighting techniques.
Grapplers specialises on ground fighting so even if we know how to fight on the ground it may not be enough unless we are fighting a against a less expereince grappler or vis versa grappler standing up against a stand up fighter.

kungfu is fun of making poems/proverbs but inside that poems/proverbs - there's a hidden technique in its deep meaning
just like saying:
1. every movement is a circle and a diagonal
2. no matter how far the distance of fight is - it will always comes to nearness
3. when your hand meets my hand, your hand is already my hand

agenda & motivation
Just came back from the Tiger balm sponsor martial art tournament here at Vancouver BC. Very busy, & very interesting too. Many contestants with different MA styles. I like the san shou sparring, set sparring, weapons & hand forms.
I think those are the categories that i`ll be concentrating in training my team for next years` competition.
No ngo cho kun, but from what I witness, ngo cho kun forms, hand & weapon forms have a good chance of grabbing some honours.
This competition have given my 3 kids some motivation to train harder & prepared for next years` competition.
