TaiChi is one of the greatest and most powerful arts out there, so it is most definately a good self-defense art if you know enough and you understand how it works

Putting the "taiji for health" clubs aside, taiji does develop some very useful skills, such as very good balance, "sticking" and the ability to generate power from nothing. However it also comes with a whole load of cultural and other baggage that often gets in the way of the training IMO.

well don't train with them cuz that is extremely wrong. that's why taichi was invented, was for chen to protect his family from the emporer. and it's taoist, u just say it with a hard d sound

Well, IMHO I have always regarded taiji chuan as one of the most powerful MAs. I do think it has been watered down, but I also think that alot of ppl refuse to teach application (and not for a lack of understanding). now that is not to sound mystical but just my thoughts.
