I was in this year's Sama-sama & boy can he move! I saw him move in the previous Sama-sama DVDs but they're nothing compared to seeing it in person. Not only a great fighter but truly an artist of movements.
Btw, Ern-Dog, are you Ernie from this year's Sama-sama?

One and the same!! How are you doing?
I'm sorry I missed the Atienza section that covered Evolution 1 during Sama Sama 2005. I wanted to brush up on that material and ask some questions, but I was testing with the other instructor candidates.
I could still feel the energy when neither of us wanted to give in during the skirmish - hehe . Anyway, great seeing you here - you have a good one, sir!
Structural cutting? Do you have a clue how easy it is to take a tool away from another person? Try it with a kerambit, that's all I have to say. You might like it?
all I gotta say is that if you are working live knife drills someone will get cut. it may not be a bad cut, but a cut.

Is there protective gear for live knife work?
yes if youre not training with extreme attention someones going to get injured, and yes sometimes people get nicked...you dont train live blade with people who have competitive/ego issues...those turn into knifings not training...as for protective gear there are gauntlets and goggles...best not to rely on that though... it kind of defeats the purpose
live blade training is best kept to drills like hubud and palasoot and not for free for all or anything goes sparring...thats what rubber knives are for.
training with live blades even solo is one of the best ways to increase your awareness and control of your hands...
oh, yeah...I'm with you 100% there, buddy.
goggles for live knife drills like the polysut flows definitely defeat the purpose of training in a controled setting for combative applications.
Only pussies need to have use of both eyes...real men can afford to lose one.
Loss of sight builds character.
...
Bro...look at it. You are doing prearranged drills. Don't they take away some of the realism???
But why do we do them? To familiarize ourselves with angles and with ranges and passing, etc etc...in a controlled setting.
Knife sparring with training knives is more for the realism part, because it lets you react to unpredictable scenarios.
Training. Training is training, not the real deal. If you're doing live knife tapping, polysut, or hu-bud...you should at the very least wear eye protection.
it isn't the weapon that you need to train against, and training edged weapons live is about as productive, in my uneducated opinion, just as good as training with a no-lie trainer.
(am I wrong???)
Secondly...what is the big deal about having an expensive knife...I mean, sure the edge might keep longer...and the joints if it's a folder...
but isn't a cheapie just as effective?
How about a small pearing knife that costs exactly 3.55?
It would probably be easier to explain to the authorities if you did have to use it...instead of a karambit or a fighting knife with the ring for the knuckle...it's like carrying around a 12 inch K-Bar...man...you're asking for legal ramifications.

Sweet martial debate!
well i see it like this if you even think you might poke one another in the eye, dont train with live blades...when students train they use rubber knives and wear goggles...as they advance they wear less protective gear and move into wooden/metal trainers . i was taught that when it had been 3 years since the LAST time you hit yourself with a bokken you could handle a live sword...follow me? live blades are not for everyone...also if your using a live blade many of them would penetrate goggles anyway if you are running wild...the lack of protection brings the reality to the forefront...safety is an illusion... only complete attention to what you are doing is going to keep you from injury.

sticking your limb into the mix with a live blade leaves no illusions of slow taps or grabbing the knife hand...when its a trainer people try each other...when its live blade the giggles are gone and the focus is serious.
and yes they are drills but with experience they become a free flow of attack and counter attack that shifts from one drill to another by feel ...you learn to improvise even with the live blade flow. speed is kept at 20 to 25 percent with live blade at maximum and is usually much slower.

I know hu-bud...
you defeated your own argument. If people screw around during edged weapons drills, even if they are training blades...they are REALLY REALLY cheating themselves.
If you do the drill with the intention of defending your angles while trying to score on the other person with a training blade at a higher speed....isn't that more realistic and better training than going slow with the real deal?
You could go with no-lies...that would tell you if (when) you get cut, without slicing you and your partner to ribbons.
Do the drill as if it were the real thing. If you need a knife to make you move properly...you weren't training seriously without it anyway.
I say, react properly at higher speed, than over compensate at lower speed.

my favorite debate...yes a cheapo will probably take out one attacker, IF it doesnt break...i often hear im gonna twist it and break it off in him anyway..What if it breaks in his arm? what if he has buddies? if you weigh 200lbs and you opponent weighs 200 lbs and you puncture his body you now have 400 lbs of fighting men levering around on a cheap blade... cheap folders are the worst in this situation...it comes down to this....a Great folder can be purchased for 200 dollars...thats cheap insurance not to have to limit my techniques in a fight for my life...i will gladly spend 500 dollars on a custom blade that fits my hand and can be carried handle down in kydex sheath so that when my hands are at my side the blade touches my palm. This allows a smooth draw as though shaking hands...no lifting ,its VERY fast similiar to drawpoint methods using reverse grip except faster. i have never seen cheap knives with realistic daily carry possibility that afforded anywhere near this speed of draw...

we do all that as well...but i still believe in live blade training...as for cheating on drills....there is a time and a place for cheating in drills...drills are about angles... you see where you are open when you attack etc. We use second attackers and airsoft guns in the middle of these drills with advanced players...kicks to each others legs while drilling etc to train the upper and lower body as well as the mind. This way the mind gets used to running upper body drills while running lower body kicking/knee attacks as well. i am not saying dont train with rubber knives...i am saying at least once a month whip out the live blades as well.
