Well, you can take a lot of slashes to the outside of the forearm and not lose a lot of blood. That's about the best place on the body that you can take a cut.

However, personally, I'd have my knife out in front because, yes, that arm out there is an inviting target and if I manage to get to his biceps/triceps area with a blade then he'll start having some real problems.

But the whole knife lead vs. empty hand lead is an ongoing point of contention in the knife training world and both methods have pros and cons. For me, though, I prefer knife in lead hand.

        Bashing Silat...

There are so many different styles of Silat. Sammy knows them all does he?
What exactly is "their knife defence"? I think that a thousand styles would have a thousand different approaches to knife defence. A few years ago, someone might have argued that all Jiu Jitsu is crap too. You just have to find someone who is training it in a manner that works.

With so many sources to learn from, comments such as these just make me want to look elsewhere.

          Front hand debate

          Hmm,

Would have to say that position looks a bit dangerous if the other person also has a knife (which I will assume he does).

assuming the attacker is facing him directly on and never angulates yadayada then ok I can sorta see the merit of the posture to a point. Even then, aiming not at the muscle but at the ligamenta and tendons on the wrist and inside elbow would cause problems.

Will have to go try this one in my silat class and see how it works. Of course if it doesn't work and I sliced then it's probably cause I am a pesilat not a CFA practitioner.
