I will try and ask a law enforcement officer but I believe the law is......

knifes may be carried "concealed" (in the pocket or sheathed) that have a blade length of not more than 4" with a single edge. double edge blades ("boot knives") and "switchblades" are illegal as are Balisong knives which make little sense as the "assited" opening features on some knives make them basically switchblades in essence.

I am not sure about the regualtions for wearing blades exposed, here in west Texas (Eagle Pass) where I am working, it is not uncommon to see knives carried in sheaths on the hip of the folding and fixed variety, some exceeding 4" blade length, but then again this IS west Texas

the palm is just a tool for guess-timation but if you plan on carrying better get a tape measure.

and remember that the "Law" allows you to defend yourself with only as much force as they deem neccesary to adequately ward off your attacker..

I have a good friend who was sentenced to 25 years for "Negligent man-slaughter" after stabbing a man ( he died on the scene, femoral artery was partially severed) who was in the mounted position and punching him repeatedly. they were both above the legal alcohol BAC (.08) and were engaged in what the law defines as "mutual combat" after a traffic altercation. the police on the scene even took photos of his thumb that was dislocated from attempting to cover and block the punches that were being rained down on him by a much larger opponent. in a way I will carry this incident to the grave, because I helped him pick out the knife, a SOG folder with a thumb spur for opening one handed. So if you plan on arming yourself its a good idea to get the laws straight. the Texas Attorney General may be a good place to start, maybe you can shoot them an e-mail.
