  • the bullwhip in FMA

I have heard of the bullwhip in FMA and about the amazing prowess of Kali practitioners with it (striking the flames off candles while blind-folded). I was wondering, is it used as a training tool mostly? or do some famlies of Kali contain the whip as a weapon for mutiple opponents? Basically I was wondering if anyone here uses the whip or has knowledge of its place in FMA.

    thank you

      Whip Info

All of the weapons commonly used in the Filipino Martial Arts (reference the 12 areas of Kali) are used as training tools. Each one is used to train different attributes: impact weapons; bladed weapons, projectile weapons, flexible weapons, etc. I'm not sure if there are "families" who emphasize the bullwhip (latigo) as a primary weapon, but it is a commonly used weapon/tool. It can be used against single or multiple opponents, and at different ranges of combat (whipping/slashing, constricting/clinch, and striking). Bullwhips range from approximately 4' to over 25', but most of the combat whips that I've encountered are in the 4' to 5' range. They can be utilized as: single whip; double whip; and whip and dagger (or sword, stick, etc.). There's an organization that promotes the bullwhip in the Filipino Martial Arts with a website (being developed), and a new book that's featured on the site:

If you're up for buying a bullwhip, check out:

I have three Peter Jack bullwhips and they're like the Ferrari of bullwhips. However, if you're going to train with bullwhips PLEASE WEAR EYE PROTECTION! The ends of whips move incredibly fast!

      Train well...

I have seen a bull whip demonstration in a Hawaii seminar by the late Grand Master Snookie Sanchez. He did a lot of amazing things with the whip which including being blind folded and hitting the wicks of a candle placed upon his students baseball caps as they surrounded him in a circle. It was amazing that he could feel the heat of the candles and distinguish the distance between the students. People will never believe until they see it.
