I have Spyderco Catcherman, which I like for it's blade lenght compared to the other Spyderco's. I also have a Windsor Excalibre, wich I just like looking at.

I carry one of the Emerson CQC-7's. I also have a small pocket knife on a key chain as well. The Emerson isn't made for really anything other than combat. It has a flat grind that helps primarily in slashing. It isn't a good everyday knife for this reason. I have had it approximately 5 years and have sent it back to be resharpened once (which they do for free). In my 30 years I have been in 8 fights which involved both parties having a knife, and 2 in which I had to fight empty handed against someone with a knife. While in the Navy I had they privy of studying with Paul Vunak and his knife fighting saved me on every account. The main requirements for any self defense knife is a good grip, sharp blade and quick access. Nothing flowery, balisongs are great but you must work with them to use one effectively. I wouldn't recommend a switchblade because one they are illegal to carry and two they really should be carried with the lock on for safety, but there goes your quickness. My Emerson can be opened every bit as fast as a switchblade plus the legality issue is good. In my years I have learned this: 1) If you can run from a knife fight, do. 2)If you think you won't be cut, your wrong. 3) If you are cut it isn't the end of the world. 4) Use both hands ( The live hand is considered the real weapon in most FMA). 5) Never quit, when you do you are dead.Comment

My favorite carry folder is a Spyderco Wegner (the full size version). This knife feels great in my hand (reverse or saber grip), is razor sharp and very easy to resharpen. It is also nice because it is designed for fish & game work, so if I ever need to defend myself in court for using this blade I will not have to worry about the blades image.
I carried a Cold Steel Voyager with a 5" tanto blade for quite sometime and was very pleased with it. Cold Steel knives are scary sharp right out of the box. I am currently eyeballing REKAT's SIFU. Now there is a monster folder!
For fixed blades I have several favorites, but my top choice for carry is the Benchmade Nimravus Cub. This knife is easily concealable, razor sharp and very easy to resharpen. If I had to go into battle tomorrow with just a blade my choice would be my Cold Steel Kukri (lightweight version). That is a knife that could do some serious damage.
I noticed a few of the posters here have mentioned ordering from Kris Cutlery. I recently stumbled across their website and interested in buying some swords off them. I am curious as to how good their quality is? I am looking at the blades in the Kris Cutlery, not Sandata.

masters of defense pointman folder, fast opening not to scary looking or overly tatical due to a spear point and bead blast finish. It opens like glass and rides in my left hip.

so are you gonna try to impress me with your legal knowledge? or your lack of knowledge of armed self defense? because contrary to your statements people can and do continue to fight after being SHOT, much less recieving broken bones...in fact breaking a major joint might be what causes him to shoot or stab you. oh btw if you dont know how to use mans oldest tool by all means rely on your vast knowledge of unarmed combatives....however those of us who know how to use them, will keep them as a back up for emergencies....dont waste my time telling me structural cutting cant/ wont stop an attack, also you may chose the extended reach to poke holes in the palms, forhead, knees, eyes etc to point out you are the wrong victim....it sounds terrible until you explain they werent attacks intended to kill but simply deter the attack on your life or your family...have fun choking out 3 assholes trying to harm your family.
And when all else fails there is always the option of deanimation...but again its all about placement of the weapon, shot placement makes the difference with a firearm and and the principle applies to all other weapons as well...try looking at the dubious quick kill links i provided ages ago in the fencing thread...you might discover you are preaching to the chior....and one more thing, i would rather have knife training and knives i dont need, than not have the training and weapons i needed for fear of offending the sheep of the world. another fine note, I live in fl...our self defense laws pretty much allow you to use deadly force to defend yourself from crazed lunitics without fear of undue persecution/prosecution for doing so....its one of the few benifits of living here....BTW have you ever been to fl? what about during nice events like black college reunion?(see the "mens rea" thread in open acess for other opinions of the event) or the lowrider competitions that come to town? dont tell me to move...my family has been here for 50 some odd years, i wont be forced out of my home by thugs...or told not to defend myself by self rightous jerks who hide behind the (imaginary) protection of people who use FAR more heinous weapons than a knife.
so in essence if you have a problem with knife defense kindly stay the hell out of the knife threads....i didnt ask for your opinion or legal advice and i damn sure dont want self defense advice from someone who advocates choking out armed multiple attackers!Comment

It looks like a cross between the the Pat Crawford Kasper fighter and the pointguard also from Pat...the lawks system is great, my wife carries the little Kasper as a backup sometimes...crkt is hard to beat for the money thats for sure.

i bought one of these smith & wesson knives the other day. its pretty cool, its light but very sturdy and strong and its operation is real smooth. the blade is real nice. what do u guys think?

Sold out and worthless on the other hand, couldnt build a good knife if thier lives (instead of yours) depended on it, the handle on a knife should never be smooth or polished metal...they are slippery when wet (whether its sweat or blood
) and can freeze to your hand in the cold. there are other drawbacks as well but those are the two major drawbacks to metal handles. locks should be STURDY, there should be little to no play in the blade side to side or up and down when locked.... if you shake the knife while open and it rattles or wiggles.....its junk. many cheap knives use inferior metals for the blades and locking mechanism the blades dont take or hold an edge well and the locks are completly useless...
you dont have to spend a fortune but 50 to 60 dollars is the minimum for a decent folder, crkt is certainly one of, if not the best option for inexpensive knives...Comment

in the price range you were looking (excluding the 16 dollar sw crap) (sorry man i HATE crappy knives) i linked a couple knives that fit the styles and functions of the blade patterns you were looking at, they come in a variety of sizes and blade styles, serrated or not/mixed and i used the site you provided

i didnt see any with seat belt cutters if thats a feature you wanted, but i always carry partially serrated edges for tasks like that...
Several higher end knives from Masters of Defense have the feature, but they run 175 dollars and up.Comment

Ryu I've been training with knives for a long time as most here. The best in my opinion any of the emerson wave designs such as the commander, or the combat karambit, any of the benchmade axis locks (I carry the Mchenry Williams 710 & the benchmade balisong) As far as fixed blades go Ka-Bar all the way.Comment

a great test of a knife is to give it to a teenage boy if it survives his tests it will serve you well...my dad said i was the best knife tester he had ever seen
(i dont think he meant it as a compliment though) and after having teenagers he is right...there is a sog tigershark floating around my family that survived 2 different teenagers throwing, prying and hammering with it. it aint purty but its still takes and retains an edge when you take a stone to it
