  • My wrists are killing me!

Hi, I'm just started training with sticks; I'm doing the warmups I've seen on the first dogbrothers tape.

Twirling the sticks, however is REALLY taxing my wrists and elbows; sometimes I wake up in the night for the pain.

    Is this normal?

Bear in mind that I don't open my grip during twirling.

    Thanks.

    Hi Underdog,

Yes, unfortunately, you may be gripping pretty hard...try to relax more in the wrist area-when I started, my forearms were getting tight...on occasion, they still do...over time, it gets easier-just stick with it!

    Good Luck!

I think such a horrible pun as the one at the end of that post should be punishable by death!

if you spent a lot of time stretching the wrist in different direction, that will help you last longer when you training with the sticks.

heres two exercises, one, hold your palms together like how some people pray, then lower your wrists to stretch the wrist and forarm. two, hold out your palm with the fingers up to the cieling, and the arm straight in from of you, and use the other hand to pull your fingers back. these two can make your foream more flexible, and you can do more before your wrist hurts.

Here is a simple fix. Use lighter sticks, and work your way up. If you are trying to start off with heavy sticks like the dog brothers, you actually run the risk of injuries. sooo start off light, and gradually work with heavier objects. An excercise that I teach my guys is to start at the hip with a stick, and simplly twirl upwards twice, and downwards twice over and over. It releases the fluid into the wrists pretty good.

humana2000 is right if your problem is weak or inflexible wrists. There is another possibility: that of the reverberation shock causing problems when doing power hits. In that case, the conventional wisdom is actually to go to a bigger stick.

good point terry, as a beginner however, the problem is most likely the wrist not being used to supination flexion, or movement in all directions. So kind of hard to say without actually knowing what the situation is. I trained with rebar for a few years, and remember that I developed some pretty nasty tennis elbow type problems. very hard on the joints to do a witik strike with heavy objects.

Stretch/warm-up your wrists and forearms before training. After training, do some more stretching exercises. You can also rub in some Dit Da Jow after training. For further grip/forearm strengthning, I use these different exercisers: Chinese exercise balls(the solid type), the GravityGripp ball, and Captains of Crush #1.

another cure would be to go to very, very heavy sticks. I use 2.5 foot iron bars (for playing horseshoes, originally, I think..real heavy)

This helps because it will teach you how to use your wrists, and how not to use your wrists. With the heavy iron bars, you can't help but learn to manipulate the stick in a way that won't tax your wrists in an unnecessary fashion...letting the stick swing through without fighting it...

You want to build up to them, in the workout, however. A standard warm-up procedure building up from lighter sticks at the workout beginning to medium weight sticks, to the iron bar.. You have to give your tendons and muscles a chance to warm up and fill with fluids..etc.
