    RICE

    Rest
    Ice
    Compression
    Elevation

Yep.... applied the ice as soon as I got home. Didn't seem to do alot... but none the less I followed thru with several applications.

Damn..... I wish I would have headed to Hawaii for that massage immediately!!!

Here's a pretty good tip for icing....
Fill a couple of stryofoam cups with water and leave in your freezer. The stryofoam acts as insulation for your hand as you hold the ice on your wound. Peel the stryofoam away as the ice melts.

In Hawaii, Rice is an everyday meal. Almost everybody in Hawaii eats rice about once a day. So when my doctor told me this with my foot injury from stopping a kick (see Thai Forum "Stopping A Kick"), when he saw the look on my face, he said, "Oh, no, not the kind you eat." Then he explained the meanings. I remember sitting at home trying to remember...RICE,uh, rest, uh, uh, ice, uh, what was C, uh, uh...

This is a great tip. Remember everyone, not to give yourself frost bite.

i do like the styrofoam cup tip, but I place great store by the standard "hangover bag".. you know, those funky blue bags that have a cap on them..they look (kind of) like showercaps.. they are always made of stretchy rubber.. you fill em with ice, add a bit of water, and cap it.. you can hold it by the cap part.. and the bag is such that it kind of stretch-drapes over whatever you set it on.. kind of like a water balloon made from stronger material.

I really like these.. and they aren't so expensive..

they are also AWESOME if you get knocked unconscious boxing.. I used to spar with this guy 50 pounds heavier.. he was an olympic hopeful (he had a boxing coach for a dad), and he was a mean bastard. he had a "snap hook" that could stop a bus.. I never saw it coming, any of the times he dropped me with it.

there is no headache like a "got knocked out today" headache.. and this bag got me through it..

just saw my dog brothers tapes, so a lot of the original confusion that made me post this question is now gone. woohoo...skin loss? wide open cuts? loss of hearing? bruises the size of an over ripe plum, but darker in coloring?

Where do I sign up? I've found my niche.

          My stick injuries

Top Dog broke my right hand with a nice backhand through
a street hockey glove....I fought two more times with that
hand and Salty Dog landed a nice shot on it before i took him down and punched him with that same hand
Salty also cracked my sternum with some awesome knee shots my very first time in California....it was awesome

My last time at a Gathering I broke my left wrist blocking a strike...did not know it was broken until 4 days later when I came back home.

then the usual stick hickeys and stuff. I do not like to spar with padded sticks....they keep breaking.

          Woof!
          Hound Dog!

              LOL!

That was my very first Gathering...back in April of 94.
There were less than 10 fighters and about 10 spectators.
After my fight with Arlan (Salty Dog, my first fight of the day, I could never catch my breath....I thought I was out of shape I fought almost 20 times that day...the majority with Arlan and Eric.

I really miss those Gatherings where it was almost a family
feeling....you can't get that feeling with 30 fighters and 200 spectators. In front of your friends its easy to play around or test a new technique....in front of an audience, you are afraid of looking bad, and it being posted everywhere on the Internet. For me, the Gatherings have become a stifling experience rather than a growing one.

Hm. Nonetheless,I'll be at one soon.

Thanks for the post Alvis.. a cracked sternum? sounds about as nasty as punching with a broken hand.

I gotta say, after watching the vids, that I better get in better shape before going. not just physical, but footwork as well..or else I'll come home just one big compound fracture..

                  Dwayne,

Watching the tapes are great preparation for a Gathering...lots of light sparring, lots of running, and
really work your power. And make sure you can grapple.

Power is important as the tapes tell you. When I fought Juggernaut, his whole attitude changed once he found out that I can hit really hard Before that point of the fight, I was the hunted...after I connected a shot on his shoulder...I was the hunter

Grappling is important as well. Once I learned how to grapple, my stickfighting improved. I was no longer concerned whether they were going to crash in on me. I was
able to recognize it and deal with it. I can now knock you out with a stick or tap you out on the ground.
And remember on the tapes, it looks alot worse than what it actually is

                    Hey Hound Dog,

Great info. and that is exactly why I started taking grappling.
