I carry and use a good old Boy Scout camp knife.

well ive handled knives all my life... and i have never ever in my lifetime held a knife even close to the quality of HI blades...
its on a whole new level.
to get a handmade blade in the US youd expect to pay 500-600 dollars at least (probably much more though)... but since they make them in Nepal where the standard of living is very low... you get an xtremely low priced blade for the quality...
HI rox... i love how the knife masters engrave their mark on every blade that passes their hands... i also love how no two blades are ever exactly the same.
Uncle Bill is in quasi retirement though... i hope that they leave the business in good hands..Last edited by Snarlin Stef; 09-03-2003, 07:40 AM.

my name is Snarlin_Stef on the HI forumn
i am not a collector of knives... but i have bought two khuks for me and some khuks for my military friends and my older bro.
whenever i buy a knife its HI for sure.
i was trying to get UB to make a special version of the 16.5 WWII... basically its a WWII with a deep gelbu special fuller in it. Chopping power with the blade design and belly yet the fuller will make it much lighter.
not enough takers... i think only 5 other forumits showed interest in it and UB said hed do it if he can get at least 10 takers...
i post there from time to time... but lately i havent... i still look it over just about every day though... great group of fellas over there.

as far as some of the other knives brought up
I have several of the smith wesson knives none of them are very good, and they are all to big.
The crkt is one of the most excellent folding fighters on the market
the carson flipper is simple yet very effective. The M16 or the 13Z are the better choices.
Even as an all around carry knife they come sharp good blades that will last for years I have several of them and carry one most of the time.

carrying a knife for self defense is kinda impractical... because if you live in any area in or around a major city.. chances are that person you are confronting has a gun. (i guess the same can be said about people in the country... im sure most country boys carry shotguns in their vehicles)
BUT... with that said... IF i were to rely on a knife for self defense.. id prefer somthing like an 18 incher... (sirus, kobras, or gelbus).. when i hold my gelbu special it just feels as though it was designed to release souls
i enjoy arnis not only bcs i like handling non-mechanical weapons... but also bcs there are lots of overlapping concepts in the other arts that i study... i find that arnis chains smoothly.
i guess the only true practical reason for getting a larger knife would be if you find yourself in the woods a lot and need a heavy duty blade that can have multiple uses as a chopper, hammer, slicer, pry-bar etc... (and if thats the case then HI knives are the shiat)Last edited by Snarlin Stef; 09-04-2003, 02:50 PM.

here ya go:
Eriks Edge is a dealer of fine antique arms and armor from all over the world. Original antique weapons for sale and trade for the serious collector, martial artist, and weapons enthusiast.
email them and ask questions too.. they are experts inthis stuff and have very very good reputations for honesty
general rules of thumb... antique philipino weapons are much better quality than the overpriced crap you find today.
the philipino-muslim blade masters of the "olden-days" knew where to shape and put the metal... the quality of their weapons far exceeds anything thats made with a modern hand. balance metal quality durability and craftmanship...
i prefer philipino moro weapons bcs i find that they are sturdier and more "sword-like" than typical kris blades (which tend to be more dagger like) moro weapons also seem to have the nicest craftmanship IMO as well.
also... one of the most knowledgeable philipino MORO weapons dealers in the US works for KRIS Cutlery.. which is ironic bcs the company does not sell moro weapons... i know that he was planning on selling his collection a while back but changed his mind... i forget the guys name but if you call them up and ask for the guy that specializes in moro weapons they will know who your talking about.
also EBAY is a great place to look as well but you really have to know your stuff... SO MANY scams... and misidentification going on there. hope that helps you out..
again i highly recomend a good moro style philipino blade.... they are a lot more hardy weapons than other kris blades and have much better artwork etc... of course they are usually considerably more expensive.Last edited by Snarlin Stef; 09-29-2003, 01:42 PM.

Also, how effective are karambits? I have never held one...but they looks as if they would be awkward to use. I am not saying that they are not useful...they just look akward.

Oh yeah, I actually bought a S&W knife. It is a fixed blade dagger with a rubberized grip, hard plastic-injected handle, 440 steel, is slightly balanced to the handle, and came with a zytel(or something like that) sheath. It is extremely sharp; however, the blade is too thin and brittle for heavy impact or heavy pressure(prying) directly on it. If it is only carried as an easily-drawn, concealable defense knife it is great. It was only about $18 at my local hardware/cutlery store. That is the only GOOD S&W knife I have ever seen. And is cheap if you do want to abuse it.
