    dear william
man thank you for you help and the time you have taken on my behalf and I will be dropping into SBG on thursday around 5 its normal for me to be early for I like to get a bit of reconnasence in before hand so if guro JD sees a long hair wandering around its just me lost in thought and internal discution
my teacher knows of pekiti tirsa kali and has encouraged me to search for that in particular I would be very intrested in looking him up as to your friend who is learning I would be more han happy to host training in my house I have a living room with a hardwood floor as well as a garage that are free and out of the rain that is pouring down from above hope this isnt the end to the good weather in the area but this is oregon lol well I am free nearly all week its easy for me to rescedule things at the moment my training at the moment is hinging on putting everything together (hopefully its gonna be enough lol) but I am gonna enjoy training in this huge house of mine definitly enough room to spread out
lol I seen too much olympic style to preston's movements for comfort and teh stick handling in his class is gonna result in easy disarms due to the length of stick protruding form the bottom thier sacrificing valuble levarage for strike power
now I have watched friends knife fight I have stitched knife wounds I have seen some of the most brutal side to a knife fight in the real world when I think of prestons students in a precarious situation I shudder to think about the resulting mess it is my belief that if training with a knife you discard most of what you know and just get into it all or nothing for thats the stakesthat this game is played by sticks are there to keep you from cutting yourself and if you dont really know what your doing you can get yourself killd I have seen men who now this and win thier knife fight then die of blood loss trying to ge to the hospitalover what they thought was a small cut ( i thought that the 3 inch cut wasnt bad I found out later he was found close to the hospital resting in a door way) now the dueling style preston is teaching is good for its application and is looking fun though it seems few of his students are knowing what thier geting into

"it is my belief that if training with a knife you discard most of what you know and just get into it all or nothing"(fgb)

What would be the point in training then if you discard it?

An exercise has an intended purpose/skill set for which it is meant to develop. Though it may well be enlightening to jump a buddy in a dark alley or flail wildly with butcher knives in the kitchen it can only take you so far. Yes, a real knife fight(or any fight for that matter) is brutal, ugly, and out of control. But there are skills which will give you a better chance of surviving. Just like the skills developed by a boxer give him a better chance on the pavement than someone who has no training at all. Of course the boxer's application of his skills for self defense won't bear much resemblance to a 12rounder.

So, if the boxer doesn't feel out his would be assailant, dance around, and throw some jabs to set him up does that mean the boxer's "dueling" training holds no value for him outside of the ring?

You watched one hour of one class with one stated purpose. This is a very small sample for which to form an complete impression of anything. If you walked in on a writing class and they were working on vocabulary or punctuation would you then think that's all they did in that class? Or think the students didn't know what writing just because they were working on one specific part of writing?

I do apologize that the tuition barred you from training at our school(something has to keep the lights on and the doors open) and feel bad that you have had such a frustrating search over all.

"He is the President and Senior Instructor in the State of Oregon for Kali/Silat Villabrille/Largusa system under Professor Greg Lontayao."(fgb)

You had mentioned interest in the Villabrille system when we met and allude in these posts to some measure of knowledge of it, have you ever actually seen it practiced?

Ryan, I sincerely hope that you are able to find what you are looking for. You seem very motivated with an earnest desire to learn-so, I believe that you will ultimately find what you're after.

      Best wishes,
      Preston

They just had Dan Inosanto in a couple of weeks back and I talked to Professor Trigg about training and right now he is training a bunch of Olympic Boxers in the Mid -West right now so he is a bit busy with that. he should be back in a couple of months. He only teaches privates because of his schedule.

I know you live in portland, but if you wanted to get some good training right now, Tom Cruse (Paul Vunaks training partner and student) lives in Eugene. I go train with him a couple days a week and I live in P-town. He is really knowledgable, and has been in the game for a long time. If your interested in Defending yourself I would say it is paramount to your game that you hook up with him.

Also there is a good thaiboxing school in north portland called Portland Thaiboxing. He is a reprentative of Ajarn Chai.

Also I am allways looking to train just e-mail me at
BrianWalsh@excite.com and give me a call.

          Well,

If you want to do Thai Boxing or Krabi-Krabong (the Thai weapons art the MT descends from), contact Ajarn Steve Wilson. He is a senior student of Master Chai's and the highest ranked actively teaching instructor of Krabi-Krabong in the U.S., certified by the Thai government to teach Thai National Martial arts. And right there in Oregon City/PDX. He used to come over to my house every week to work with us. A very knowledgeable and good person. Another one with a great heart.

He is here on Defend.net, just PM Chalambok. Or e-mail him at chalambok@hotmail.com
