Yep, that's Guru Rudy. The other guy that he's demoing with is my instructor, Ray Schardijn. Thanks for that link, I've only seen that article in the magazine, I didn't know that it was online.

Ray is where he's actually demo-ing techniques from Tjimandi, Tjikalong, Setia Hati, & Serah.
Yeah, I asked Ray if there were belts in Ratu Adil, and he said, wear what you like, but the Silat top is a pull over so if we wear belts or sashes, it's just for looks. I asked "How do you know what rank someone is?" He laughed and said,"I know because I know everybody[in Ratu Adil]!"
My style is the setia Hati Terate From Master turpjin, or Turpin who was in Holland, and taught to Charles Joussot. Our moves and fighting are most taken from the tiger than the monkey (I think)
I stopped silat years ago, but definitively, my fighting mentality has been diriged by silat. Everyone I know from silat are real fighter.
In silat, there is two things (depend of your teacher):
Fighting Spirit : I've never find a so strong mindset in anything else. In France, people used to say that we were a sect...
Conditioning and going beyond the pain.
Since I left silat, my body is ok, but I am not practicing conditionning regularly, and it's strange to take a low kick, and fell it!
Before, people used to say that I was lying when I was saying that I didn't feel anything...
If you have more documentation, just post it, I will be happy to learn more about other pencak styles.
But there is one big point I would like to make about Pencak Silat (Pentjak) in any of its forms, It is not a competition or sport Martial Art it is exactally that an Art, a Martial Art for War that is why it is not allowed in competition and why I chose it for myself and my Dauhgter because I wanted her to have the abilities of this peticular Art (Pencak Silat Ratu Adil) that way no playing around If someone every tried to hurt her again this time it was going to be them that gets hurt and I knew that she had the mental status to handle this type of Martial Art. As with any type of training of Martial Arts you really don't want someone in there that is just doing it and going to act like little billy bad ass show off bragging running their mouth off with BS they are all to be taken serious but you should have fun too so as to not lose your center.
Martial
how do silat practitioners become proficient in their art? i dont know much about silat, only from what ive seen in these demo videos on the internet. do silat pracitioners do any sparring? how do they learn to use their techniques versus resisting opponents? im just curious as silat looks pretty cool, but all ive seen is the demos online. id like to know how silat practitioners prepare for actual combat/encounters. is the partner work they do at high speeds enough to be effective in real encounters?
It depends of the school, but our school was very tough. people who wer comingfrom kick boxing and other discipline couldn't stay in our club.
We were training like Muay thai people, without any protection.
Is tit effective?
We were all working in security, as body guard, and yes it is really effective.
I trained in Ju Jutsu, BJJ, Boxing, taekwondo, JKD, and others, but Silat was the thoughest by far.
And it was in France. It was nothing really. I didn't go to indonesie yet, but some of my sparring went, and believe me, it's really hard to resist there more than 3 or 4 months.

so silat training includes full contact sparring, but without safety gear? i understand there are many different styles of silat, is this common in most of them? and are there many injuries do to sparring with no protection?
It was like that with charles Joussot and Yves. We was more training on a "Protection Security approach" with experienced people. So our training was hard.
But the style in itself is never hard never soft.
Others just focus on style and lankas.
Yes, you could have severe injuries, and in the beginning, I was coming 1 day, then 3 days I was staying at home because of the pain.
If you wasn't able to support, charles will not accept you among his students. But after 2 or 3 months, the conditionning and the spirit of the club start to make a difference. After 1 year, you don't care about punches and strikes anymore.
The contact sparring where like at 80%. For that, you can'ttrain with anyone, but you need to find sparring at your level. I mean, If I go to train with a newer practicioner with a little conditionning, I will not hit like I train with my usual sparring.
There are injuries, but it is the price for efficiency (like in Muay thai). You just need to be careful.
