interesting video, as has already been commented on the hand speed was very impressive. i also really liked the low kicks he used to muck up his attacker's footwork. those have always struck me as potentially some of the most useful techniques for a fight.

Does anyone know how Chinese arts came to be mixed with an Inonesian style?
        My understanding is very limited.
When Chinese Shaolin monks migrated to Indonesia it was a culture shock. Chinese had martial arts, it was about honor, respect and tradition. There were set rules to their martial arts. The Indonesians had war arts, they used many deadly weapons and did not share Chinese customs. The indonesians would constantly rob chinese merchant shops, so the monks took their shoalin art and removed unneccessary movements to make it quicker and more effecient for dealing with these new threats. They created Kuntao

The Indonesians (Silat) and the Indonesian Chinese (Kuntao) kept their arts very secretive.
Next came the Dutch. They inhabited Indonesia for quite a while, and both the Indonesians and the Chinese wanted to befreind them. Up until about the 1940s-1950s Chinese and Indonesian arts were taught to certian dutch people living in Indonesia.

The dutch were kicked out of Indonesia, and some came to the US. They are the roots of what we in the West know as Kuntao Silat, and there are not many of them around. So if you get a chance, learn from them.

The only unneccessary movements are the ones you dont understand the applications to Yes the movements were modified to suit the new threat they encountered in the new environment. However thats how ALL arts were built, buy adapting to and surviving the threats they face....

Different indigenous populations are built differently and dress to suit their enviroments..an art that works in one enviroment WILL need adaptation to function effectivly against new threats brought on by different states of dress and build...some cultures use knives daily and naturally employ them in fighting...that requires some adjustments to ANYONES art...

                    Hey Mmafighter152,

why don't you try fighting a silat guy on a muddy ground, concrete surface, rocky areas maybe?...watch out for his fingernails too...that silat guy may shove them where your last meal comes out.

I'll remember not to shake a Silat practitioner's hand from now on, lol...

Silat could care less about rules. Eyes are a go! Ears, a go! Groin, always!!! Half the stances are used with particular attention to keeping the groin safe.
Real Silat is all about the all-out dirty, life-or-death scrap. Not sparring.

                          You ARE VERY STRONG!! MmaFighter152.

Wow, so you will kick me and beat me?

I am very afraid my friend. Actually, I've never be more afraid in all my life.

May be I will not sleep because I am so afraid of you...

Dont be fooled my this MA, you could never fight someone with this, and plucking out their eye and other foul tactics can only really be used unless you know how to fight or your attacker or opponent doesnt. If the guy in the video thinks that those techniques work in a fight then hes obviously never been in one.

to be serious, silat was my first art, and I am waiting for you my friend!

Silat is not what you think. When you don't know, don't talk.

You don't have manner. I may teach you.

                          Silat sucks?

First: silat will not fight against you my friend, but real people. and don't get me wrong, I am notsomeone who is doing competition. I hate those.

Anyway, be careful when you talk, in some part of the world, you can get killed for nothing, really.

I can't bear "mouths warrior wanna be" and I am not alone.

So here is what you must do:

                          1. Respect any martial art: TMA or MMA
                          2. Respect any teacher, even if he is 80 yearsold, and can't fight anymore
                          3. Respect people who post
                          4. Respect silat
                          5. Respect yourself
                          6. Take care...

For the moderators of this forums: I am just putting things on their place.

                          Thank you for comprehension.

MmaFighter152, I have nothing agains you, but all these I am a best fughter and my style is the best! You give me big headaches. I hope your teacher(s) are not telling you things like that.

See how I am polite with you? take a lesson (believe me, if it was some years before, I ask your address and come right away to your home! But I am almost retired now...)

That kind of behavior will bring you problems. I KNOW that you don't have any experience, may be 10 real fight, or something like that...

                          Ok, enough
(I'm very polite with you, and if you reply, I hope the same for you).

Again: I don't like to see people in troubles, I've seen too much disasters. Be polite and respectful, thanks a lot for reading.

HOWEVER, I did boxing and I practice ju jutsu (Brazilian), and I like my silat style.

BUT I WILL ALWAYS ADMIT that:
Ju Jutsu and boxing helped me a lot, in complement.

Our master philosophy was to let us go and register with all other clubs to see what they are doing and be able to defeat them by knowing their styles and attacks.

The first day I went into boxing, they killed me, my head was so paining... I couldn't do anything, because everything I could do was prohibited!

Same when I trained in taekwondo, in the beginning, those guys kicked me very hard. I didn't even know how to kick!

But one of our teacher, Franck Ropers was a taekwondo expert, and used to said to us that taekwondo guys were dangerous: I confirm.

But after the class, in each of these sport, none was able to play with me.

YOU ARE RIGHT for one thing: If I did not do boxing, some muay thai, and ju jutsu, I would not be so efficient at silat.

YOu got to follow the evolution.

                          Please be polite, again. thanks.

I looked at the videos until the knife thing, I stopped it.

Until the knife, it was ok. I know that those techniques work. If it didn't work, there is no way I will be able to tape on my computer today...

I am not coming from a nice and soft place.

However, When it comes to knife, I don't believe any style and anyone. For all newbies here, and everybody, never fight against a knife.

Run instead. I learned this from my silat teacher, and he was true.

If you can't run, try to run, if you still can't, pray and fight to survive.
But don't thing one second of all these funny things you see in Demo, otherwise you will be stabbed.

                            Thanks.

yoshinkan I agree you are spot on (Today 10:58 AM posting)

But there is one big point I would like to make about Pencak Silat (Pentjak) in any of its forms, It is not a competition or sport Martial Art it is exactally that an Art, a Martial Art for War that is why it is not allowed in competition and why I chose it for myself and my Dauhgter because I wanted her to have the abilities of this peticular Art (Pencak Silat Ratu Adil) that way no playing around If someone every tried to hurt her again this time it was going to be them that gets hurt and I knew that she had the mental status to handle this type of Martial Art. As with any type of training of Martial Arts you really don't want someone in there that is just doing it and going to act like little billy bad ass show off bragging running their mouth off with BS they are all to be taken serious but you should have fun too so as to not lose your center.
                              Martial

"RT: First, you have to understand what is meant by the name of the art,
pentjak silat. Pentjak is just the training, the forms, the djurus, the
exercises. Silat is the combat techniques. Without pentjak, you don't have
silat. If you only have pentjak, you cannot fight. If you only know silat,
you are not well grounded. You need to learn them together. ........

Then, there is silat. Silat is the fighting technique itself. You learn to apply
all of your knowledge against opponents, develop your attributes, and so on."
