What about saying that bowing is culturally inappropriate for Americans and promotes un-critical thinking that leads to old fashioned training methods.

I dunno Mista Green? You might say that a long bowing ceremony is useless in modern Judo.
But its all about perspective. Afterall thaiboxers go through a several minute ritualized dance to give thanks to their coaches and trainers. Yet thaiboxers are some of the toughest and best stand up fighters in the world.

It wasn't a rare occurance.I saw it many times. In fact the coach John Holm formerly of Minneapolis , now is in the Seattle area, and is still doing it. He has a brand new website at
judochampions.com (I had to go thru Yahoo to find it they havn't got all the bugs out yet.)
But he isn't very well liked except for those that learn Judo from him.Thats a long story .But he's got over 50 years of Judo behind him and he trained over 35 individual first place national and international champions.
As far as learning Judo it's VERY important that you are taught correctly at your first exposure to the sport because it will affect the rest of your playing days. It takes 3000 repititions to learn a sports skill but it takes 10,000 repetitions to UNLEARN a wrongly learned skill!
I hate to say it because these guys will try to ban me but if the Judo school you first visit is all wrapped up in the bowing and Japanese religous overtones my advice is to walk away. You will notice that they also try to teach Judo standing still and probably have No idea of how to teach it.Its called CLASSICAL JUDO and is the reason that the United States is last place in the competitive Judo world.
Sorry Green I have to call you on this one.
First off no legimate judo organization has allowed white belts to compete with blackbelts for quite some time. Guess it is for the protection of the Blackbelts
Second. What international champions has he produced. I am under the impression we in the U.S. do not have many because they are to busy bowing.

CLASSICAL JUDO
There is nothing more beautiful to watch than classical judo done the way it was meant to be. Inouye (JPN) throwing Gill (CAN) in the finals of the 2000 Sydney Olympics was a perfect example.
The ranking of the US (or Canada for that matter) on the world judo scene has nothing to do with the type of judo being taught. It has everything to do with the commitment of the judoka and the experience of the coach/trainer.
We in North America have too many other diversions and not enough interest by the masses for the governments to put sufficient funds into judo.

Do the ceremonies help american thai boxers over here? Do they teach thai boxing standing still?Their ceremonies are inclusive within their society, seeing it is the dominant religion it does not exlude very many people over there. You may try the several minute ritulized ceremony with your employer and then tell him it was to show respect but I bet he will fire your ass for being crazy.
Most martial arts started as religious cults, and some people use that cult stuff as a control method. ( sex ,money ,power, same old same old)! In fact some so-called martial art schools are just a cover for cult type mind control, outsiders can see it alot of the times, like the schools whose techniques are so DEADLY that their students aren't allowed to compete in contests.Laughable

just as a well bred race horse looks good it is an innate appeal something that looks right. Classical Judo uses analogies of sticks and boxes to describe movement. Try to teach movement standing still. And it is carried on thru the generations it (judo) being taught incorrectly leaving the individual to struggle on his own to sort out the conficting teaching methods on his own screwing up any skill that happens to pop out.
Classical Judo is not an evolving sport enviroment. It is a stactic time worn attempt to teach sport skill without the benifit of modern technology, such as video or computers. The emphasis on bowing and Shinto religion rituals promotes un-critical thinking that leads to oldfashioned training methods.
