What's wrong with Karate? As a whole? I would say the most glaring flaw is that you can't punch your opponent's face... I don't care if you do MT. If you can't attack the face the system is flawed...

In my opinion this depends on the style of karate. Traditional stuff like Shotokan is not incredibly effectice but Kyoushokan and Seidokan are both very similar to muay thai and very effective. There are Kyoukoshin fighters fighting successfully in K-1 and in Pride.

Depends upon the person and their training. One of the nastiest fighters I've come across is a Shotokan karateka. All he's ever done is Shotokan and he's fast, smooth, unpredictable. I also get to work with a couple of Kyuokoshinkai karateka and they are tough but they also tend to walk into things.

When was the last time you did karate?

Punching to the face is allowed in WUKO/WKF Karate, the contact level is different, you are only allowed to make light contact with the glove

[QUOTE=HandtoHand]This has already been mentioned, by darrington but many martail artists know many techniques, the think that they know how to use them but they really dont. The backhanded slap is a classic example, it should be used as a reflexive strike after an inital movement, and should be directed against pronounced sensitive targets like the nose, but the instructors and the students are clueless about all this stuff.
              QUOTE]

this backhandslap or uraken uchi, is only used as a distraction for the most time and is directed at the temple, but if it couldn't score at all, it could not be used as a reflexive strike, because no-one would react to is

Karate styles like Kyoukushin and Seidokan are effective in my opinion. They are doing well in k-1 and in there are some in Pride.

"martial arts" the term isnt "street cred"

in my humble opinion martial arts is more of a mind set then anything else, it doesnt prepare you for a street fight, truthfully a guy with a good street fight belt behind him would ruin most "martial artists" because he knows what to expect and how to counter such expectations...

the arts is a academic reasoning... it teaches disicpline and focus... not how to beat up a guy who doesnt like your t-shirt...

nothing is wrong with karate or any other MA... its the people who think there is..

if you want to be able to fight on the street, then go fight, loose, and understand how to complete such ideals... it has nothing to do with the MA your practicing at the time

                  peace

Welll, I think I did say that there is still some Karate that trains effectively. But it is very rare.

Looking a that pic you posted - he isn't part of it.

The pictures of kids stood about punching thin air put me off........

People think they're hard core because they do things that are tough to do - like training in the sea, daft things like that. But make them event specific if you want the benefits to translate into the event itself.
