The poll is flawed, as this insistence for some reason that the younger man has crossed trained, when the older man has not, means that we are comparing young apples to old oranges.

Randy wasn't fazed at all by Vitor's speed, eh!

            Is that "modernization"?

            Good question!

Stupid question- but alway's a good one!

              Youth vs Experience

One quality that younger fighters tend to have against older experienced fighters is their ability to be complety random and experimental. About 2 years ago, while I was in college, I had gotten into an intense sparring match with one of the elder students. I was about 20 then, and the other gentleman was about 32 training in there 6 years longer than me. When the match started, I was bouncing around while he remained very still coiled like a snake. Every time I lunged in to attack, he was able to counter easily. After 3 mins, I was starting to get exhausted, then he was on the offensive, and I had a hard time defending. After about 4 good shots [3 body / 1 head], I had to think of something fast. So I started to drop my guard, hoping he would go for my open spots. He did, and I blasted him with the classic boxing 1-2 combo, and he didn't want to continue the match.

Experience is good to have as a fighter, but against an opponent who is random [or just crazy], it would boil down to who is faster and stronger.
Does anyone feel different? Let me know.

                Maturity...the last generation

                Dear All,

This post fits perfectly into the equation...

One quality that younger fighters tend to have against older experienced fighters is their ability to be complety random and experimental.
A more mature person would not be so likely to make such a potentially hazardous experimentation...

Also, with age comes toughness...it has been said in this thread that an older person is less likely to recover from injuries. They may be more succeptable to injury, yet are more capable to mentally over come the pain and continue on. Pain is a natural part of the aging process.

Finally, determination and commitment are two of the greatest influence on the outcome of a violent encounter. The older generation are generally physically and mentally more hardened. Having worked in the fields or in mills and plants, having preformed manual labor for most of their lives. Having overcome hardships and adversity is something that the average twenty something is not accustomed to.

The older generations were the children of the depression, the World Wars, soldiers of the second and third generation etc...the average twenty something has missed out on a great life experience etc...

                Just my thoughts and opinions...

                TAEKWON!

(P.S. I also believe this same lack of adversity and hardship is one of the biggest contributing factors on the moral decline of the nation!)

I guess it depends on how old you are when you say "Older generation"
Most of the "Older Generation" I see are a bunch of fat old men that never worked any fields, let alone mow their own lawn. Busting at the waistline, on the Atkins diet. Living off McDonalds and fast food, ready to die of a heart-attack. And they squandered everything they have. The depression was from '29 - '41. This is before the Baby-boomers, and yes, I know many people from that time and they are a strong group. They worked for everything they had and saved every dollar. Too bad that by the time us twenty-somethings grow up there wont be anything left. Inheritance will be spent, Social-Security will be a savings account, Oil will be gone, and people will have no electricity, and we'll still be paying for their viagra, diet pills, and anti-depression medication. In one generation everything about America has changed. When I look at everything thats wrong in the US, I look at demographics. Babyboomers run this nation, the elderly despise them just as much as us "Twenty-Somethings". They are the only
biggest contributing factor on the moral decline of the nation!)

                    I disagree...

                    Dear Sir,

I believe that many of the generation of the baby boomers is the split of America...1/2 were proud soldiers that fought in Vietnam, the others are the hippies that protested Vietnam.

Those that served their dishonored country with honor passed the hard line mentality to their children. The "other" group created the liberal transition of the world.

Also, I see two sets of 20 somethings...One were born to veterans of the last great generation while others were born to the "mid" generation. The children that are so far removed from those of the depression are those that harbor, facilitate, and promote the moral decline of America!

Civil Rights have ruined this country ... the Baby Boomers in office are only looking at job security by serving the proponents of the last great voter registration...GENERATION X!

Spookey, I diagree on a couple of things that you brought up. To me age doesn't bring toughness. It's the environment that you're raised in determines how toughness of an individual. [ex. people who had to endure vietnam, wars, etc]. Another thing that you forgot to acknowledge was the children of people who immigrated to this country [like myself].

At I'm wondering what you mean by "Civil Rights ruined this country". If you look at the history of America itself, it was built by immigrants [blacks as slaves to plantations, chinese built the railroads], and they never got the respect they deserved. It's not really needed in todays times, but back then it was almost vital to people of various cultural backgrounds to get treated like a human being in society.

As martial artists age, their style changes with them. Younger fighters have the ability to be really aggressive and are able to make mistakes.

Older fighters have to be more economical and efficient with their footwork and their striking. What worked for a fighter at 20yrs old, might not work for an older fighter.

The fighters style changes as they age. I guess this is true of all martial artists. What they taught 5yrs ago, is not the same as what they are teaching right now, nor will it be the same thing taught 10 years in the future. A teachers lessons change as their understanding of their style changes.

So if I could make a judgement I would say that if you could get a younger aggressive fighter with the same efficiency, and economy of motion that an older fighter needs, he would be the better fighter.
