He really didn't back down at all actually...he knew they were BULLSHIT as they all admitted to not having $10,000. The man writes books, collects weapons, and teaches children martial arts(regardless of the quality)he has the challenge where you have to PAY HIM $10,000 to fight, under the stipulations stated as such on his website, not $5,000 and offer different rules than he stated. I don't change rules at work to appease myself for an easier day...goddamn, so many keyboard warriors, not you, they at bullshido.

Since you guys have brought this one back from the dead, I'll add in my ideas on this. I am very suprised, Koto, that your instructors gave you exercises from the "finger weaving", these are usually reserved for the masters. (No offense intended)

That being said, I personally want no part in knowing anything of it. It, as someone already stated, stem from a buddhism. But it is not soley to re-align your chi. There are plenty of other exercises to do that if you really want to know them, I'd be more than happy to describe them, or pick up most any tai chi book.

The idea behind the "finger weaving" is that you can "command the spirit world", or some nonsense like that. It is a way of praying to one's ancestors. Problem is, there is no real guaruntee that the correct spirits will answer. Therefore, higher finger weaving will actually teach you strikes that will affect the spirit realm so you can fend off the wrong spirits and get back to communing with you dead grandmother. Tanemura revealed a little of this in a documentary the Discovery Channel did a few years back.

I don't know about you, but that doesn't really jive with my beliefs on religion. I'm not Buddhist and much of what Buddhism has to say, if not all, is directly opposite to my Christian beliefs. I am not going to tell anyone not to do the exercises, but look hard into the background behind things such as this.

I read back trying to see where I said that, and I can see which post you mean. I do meditate and use some different meditative techniques but the most of my kuji kiri I have seen is from Shihan van Donk and several other high-ranking dans, one of my instructors as well. Shihan van Donk actually told my sensei to take out the books he had at the dojo on those (after I had skimmed through them a bit) as he didn't want anybody dealing with those until they felt they were ready. All the experience I really have is a bit of mudra stuff from several meditation seminars I've been to, but no real kuji kiri.

That's one interpretation of them. I've heard another that I tend to agree with more. Psychologists have learned that when studying or learning something new, if you get to the actual situation where you will apply the stuff you've learned, if you make it similar to the situation you've learned it in you'll perform and remember it better. So if you're studying for your biology final and eating a green apple Jolly Rancher when you ate one every class before, eating one during the test will aid you as it'll subconsciously remind you of more of what you've learned. I think kuji kiri is similar to that, as some of them are supposed to pass off states of mind or ideas to meditate on, so if you're in a situation where you need one you can concentrate on it and you'll perform better. Using the wrong one in the wrong situation, however (say you did the same thing for your english final with strawberry Jolly Ranchers, and eat a strawberry one for your biology final) might bring about unwanted results.

            Just my $0.02

Acupuncture was learned the same way many of the methods of western science were learned : by trial and error.

And trial and error are the FOUNDATION of modern science. When we say "Modern Science" we mean "Techniques learned through the methods of trial and error"

Trial and error is what the word "experiment" mean.

Now, Western Medicine and Eastern Medicine are like two different guys, using the same investigative methods on the same problems - yet came up with different answers.

A human body is not like a car or a truck. On a vehicle, if your starter is out, there is really only way good method to replace it, and you must replace it with a starter. It is cut and dry - there is one method and it is the best.

The human body is nothing like that. It is a huge system of chemical reactions, physical systems, and god knows what else.

Acupuncture was one more trial and error method for dealing with imbalances in this huge system. It is as viable a system as western science. Many western doctors are sending patients to acupuncture practitioners for additional help.

Of course, it could just be a bunch of tiger-ball-powder-making, needle-waving weirdos.

But if I ever have my very own pet cancer to care for, feed and love.. you had better believe *I'M* checking out ALL of MY options.
