[QUOTE=jcmack] I'm sure that if they had guns then, they would have used them. /QUOTE]

What about the Samuri? Firearms were available to them, but most refused, and stuck to the higher principles that the art is founded on.

Thanx for getting this back on track

When I first posted this I should of pointed out that I was talking about melee weapons, but that doesn't mean just traditional weapons. If u find that a tellescopic batton is the best say so and why.

No no no, you should never get a cattle prod near water!

Samurai had guns, but they were black powder guns. They didn't use the cartridges we now have. They were only good at a distance, weren't as accurate, and had long load times. Anyway, the nature of the thread has now been changed. My favorite melee weapon that I actually carry sometimes is the kusari, but the most powerful melee weapon in my opinion is the katana. Unfortunately, you can't carry these around anymore.

chain. Sometimes I carry it in my pocket. Sometimes I wear it like a belt if I have a loose shirt on. It depends on the situation.

The Samurai viewed firearms as a less than honorable weapon. The japanese military did convert to black powder weapons, after the effort to modernize them for combat took hold, but these weren't samurai, they were government soldiers.

In England, you can no longer even carry a knife or any other object with the intention of using it to defend yourself. Very unfortunate.
This is all the more reason to train, and remember that YOU are the weapon.

my good old iridium tipped parker fountain pen.

at any sign of trouble i covertly uncap it and hold it in key grip knife position and premeditate a kill strike on someone's jugular. a ball point pen works just as well. i like to know that i have a weapon but not something that can be taken away from me in an inspection.

I don't class a hand gun as a martial art weapon, i believe it defeats the point of being a martial artist, wouldn't times be brilliant if the wars now were fought with hand to hand combat and swords like the samurai. Its stupid a life time of martial arts trainning can be defeated with the slightest pull of a trigger. The only exception would be the movie equalibriam(sp?) the end scene was impressive and that was with hand guns.

I thought i would quote from good old English secret service man Mr Braithwait from the best martial arts movie in the world "Any bloody fool can pull a trigger" , i can't believe Bruce even suggested using guns, "bang settle it".

Oh and Si is short for Simon, Simon Williams, im not sure what alse si could have stood for, although ive been to the states quite a few times, and nobody had really heard of the name, it isn't very common over there - try and name an American celebrity whose first name is Simon? All i could think of was the best friend in 'erie Indianna', that US show.

                            Any way

So Simon, since you do live across the pond,is Yinboxers post accurate about not being able to even carry a pocket knife anymore in England? The last time I was over there was in 94, so things may be different now.

William, in that same vein of thought, a lifetime of martial arts training can also be defeated by one swing of the sword, or one club from a hammer, or one poisoned chili dog. The sword was used in feudal Japan because it was the best weapon of the time. As weapon technology advances, and as some martial arts choose to advance with the times, they adopt new weapons. One of the marks of an effective martial art is adaptation to any environment. This means the battlefield as well. You are right. Any moron can pull a trigger. Many morons carry guns now. Should you not familiarize yourself with the weapons of your enemy? If a dummy is so dangerous with a gun in his hand, think of how powerful it would be in the hands of a trained gunfighter and martial artist. Why not take advantage of this technology if you can? This is my point. I do understand that you can't carry guns in the UK. I'm just trying to clear up a point I tried to make earlier.
