No, I don't intend for this thread to become a discussion about Rurouni Kenshin -- there are enough anime forums and blogs on the internet for that sort of thing.

But perhaps I have been watching too much of that anime because I'd like to know if anyone there knows of samurai swordsmanship techniques which involve cutting/attacking by drawing the sword once. I'm sure there are, but I am curious and would like to discuss with those who have trained in this style of swordsmanship. I'd like to study it myself as a novelty.

    Swordsmanship: Old school styles; Yagyu Shinkage-ryu, Ono-ha Itto-ryu, Sekiguchi-haItto-ryu, Hokushin Itto-ryu, Hyoho Niten Ichi-ryu, Jikishinkage-ryu, Maniwa Nen-ryu, Shizen-ryu, Kyo Hachi-ryu, Tamiya-ryu, Jigen-ryu and Kage No-ryu...

But it sounds (reads) like you are referring to Iaido-Ryu, the art of Drawing your sword.

If a Samurai trained to fight with swords while swimming in full armor it was another Ryu, Suiei-jutsu.

There were schools that specialized in Kogusoko (shortswords) and schools that specialized in daggers (Tantojutsu)

Thank you much for the information. That will surely cut the time for research in half. I've done some research on sword-drawing techniques, the various stances, footwork, and methods of "battou-jutsu". I'll start practicing on my own, soon -- my grandfather recently gave me a katana and wakizashi.
