  • Judo with an edge. (rant)

    IJF says no such thing!

Ready for this? From the IJF website: Unlike karate, judo doe(s) not involve kicking, punching, or striking techniques of any kind. Unlike aikido, judo does not involve the application of pressure against the joints to throw an opponent. Unlike kendo, judo involves no equipment or weapons of any sort. Instead, judo simply involves two individuals who, by gripping the judo uniform or judogi, use the forces of balance, power, and movement to attempt to subdue each other...

What a load! I will NEVER hold rank with the IJF! I don't care how spectacular Olympic Judo is or who sits on the board of directors. Kodokan is DEAD to IJF!

My Judo includes a knife (or two) and I don't need a grip on some uniform, I can insert a handle where ever I need it!

Atemi waza is striking vital targets with your hands (atewaza) or your feet (geriwaza). It is included in Kodokan Judo in Kata and exercises! While throwing with pressure against a joint is illegal in competition Judo there are throws in judo that fall into kansetsunage... (kanibasami)

I feel like punching Uke in the face, it's Judo... I feel like kicking Uke in the nuts, it's JUDO! If I feel like cutting his throat, IT'S JUDO but don't take MY word for it. Go study the Kata of Kodokan Judo! Screw IJF and the art they call "Judo"!

No kicking, punching or striking techniques at all?

No weapons of any kind? Contradicting the founder of Judo is not promoting the art. It's killing it!

I never took Judo but I take subgrappling and we borrow a lot from judo. Thats bullshit stuff. What theyre talking about is like Worlds Strongest Man Wrestling. Thats like saying Muay Thai is throwing your limbs at your opponent to KO him. I guarantee a beginner judo practicionar could toss an average guy on his ass, and if it was all strength, that wouldnt be the case. I hate people who put down martial arts and try to make it seem like some bloodsport or streetfight garbage.

That's fine, I don't particularly care for organizations that claim to teach something and insist you're getting it all while they leave out the MARTIAL applications of your art, the weapons out of your Kata (forms) and the spirit out of your attack or defense.

Atemi (waza) is a big part of real SD, don't you think?

That's probably based on "Competitive/Sport" Judo, not "Real" Judo.
As anyone who has taken Judo knows...everything "they" said does exist.

Evidently atemi waza is for research and historical value only?

            From IJF website;

The third major category of judo techniques is called the atemi waza. These include all of various techniques of striking, punching, and kicking. These techniques are remnants from the various schools of military combat fighting arts in feudal Japan from which judo originated. As such, they are preserved for study and practice only through ritualized kata – the practice of stylized forms. Even so, the practice of the katas that include the atemi waza are generally reserved for only the most senior of judo practitioners – holders of high ranks, for their understanding of the history and development of judo. Because contemporary judo practice and competition includes no such techniques, judo is a rigorous and demanding, yet, entirely safe and effective method of training.

            I see......

Kirikomi is a typical downward slash, the defense technique practiced in Judo Kata against this type of attack is performed in a kneeling position. Tsukkomi is a thrusting technique aimed at the abdomen. Defense against this type of attack is also practiced in a kneeling position (idori) Both can be found in the Kime no Kata...
Kiri-gake: aimed at the head from the Kime Shiki (forms of decision) ... Naname-tsuki: aimed at the neck (carotid) also in Kime Shiki it is practiced in standing position (tachiai)

The list is extensive and nearly any empty hand technique can be modified to tanto-waza

                    Thanks for asking!

No.... I'm a complete amatuer. The closest I've been to Judo recently is the BJJ/GJJ academy in Northern Ca.

                          BTTT for The Judo Jibboo!

Also to add that Kodokan Goshin Jutsu has a number of weapon techniques and defenses against weapons. If you think like the Uke you have crappy atemiwaza. Get serious about weapons! practice with a stick. Tsukiwaza (thrusting) and anything described as a "downward slash" or "upper cut", "Jab" etc can easily be modified to include your favorite weapon. A pistol (for example) makes a good stick! But don't take my word on anything!

                            Heres my rant on Judo...

Went to a club, (different from the other one I mentioned in the other thread Tanto).

I ask to try a class, you know, see how they do things and that, and expect it to be free, so we do some stuff, start with Newaza (that seems to be trend) tap out some fools (not because of judo, just there fools) than get told I'm supposed to pay 15 bucks (like.. 20 minutes into the class) because im a "visitor". Shouldnt you let someone try something before they sign up for 3 months or something like that.

I thought that was bullshit, so I just left, I'm kinda exhausting my judo options at a fast rate, oh well those people were douches.
