Please people don't watch this through MMA eyes, this video differs nothing from those from other high ranking Aikidoka, where striking is done 1 by 1 only grabbing is done at the same time
This is just an Aikido exercise like demo they all do
Segal's is actualy the most dynamic I've seen upto now, some of them the guy in the middle does either not touch the attackers at all or just barely and still they fall

No style is immune to criticisim on this site just ask the Krav Magra, Shotokan, Wing Chun and Tae Kwon do people. Mr. Segal's Uke's did not do a good job of making him look good.

I see what you mean, but looking good shouldn't be as important as being able to make the technique work, right?

IMHO some of the best demonstrations I've seen were when the action heats up in sparring or grappling. It's not asthetic, but when it works its beautiful.

That's besides the point, Like I said, this is just an exercise demo, of course it sucks, but all these videos do, because the Uke fall way too easy for it to have any reality, but if you compare other video's to these, Segal actually look more dynamic

Personally I would have like to have seen some of Mr. Segals wrist locks and throws come off of a punch or kick from the Uke and not just a grab.

the problem I see is that even though it is just and exercise/demo his Uke are doing him a diservice. You can't continue to improve your skill without the difficulty level going up. His Uke need to give him some "honest energy and intent" as my teacher used to say.

As this demo is usually done by high ranking Aikidoka, I do not think the not improving your skills is realy an issue
Appart from that I haven't seen such demo's where the Uke are giving "honest energy and intent"
Recently saw a video that was pulling this into the ridiculous, all the Uke were thrown without even touching them
It was so over the top that I deleted it strait away

It's one of the problems I've found with almost all Aikidoka I've trained with. They never go beyond a certain resistance. It wound be like a power lifter who only lifts the same amount of weight day in and day out.

You can't improve without the level of difficulty increasing. Ukes who fall over at the slightest touch are doing you a disservice. My teacher used to call them "train seals"

I've got a video of a Tomiki Aikido demo, huge difference, Tori really applies the techniques ( well most of them)

If someone knows a place where I can put it so people can download it, it's 10 mb

Found some of the video's, not multiple oponents but 101 work of the Tomiki WC, on http://www.wakefield-aikido.co.uk/multimedia.htm, weird though that the one I have from the japanese squad doesn't seem to be omongst them
But downloaded another of the japanese squad and ...very dynamic perfomance too
                      Take a look!!!

                        What a site!

I wanted to ask a question about akido and here I find a dedicated thread! I recently changed jobs and it just so happens that at my new position there is an akido club/class in place. the fee is nominal so basically I was looking for some input from current or former akido practitioneers just for some insight into what I should expect. the instructor is an older guy, I beleive he was trained in Japan if that means anything.
secondly, this is question is in the same vain: while checking out the selection at walden books I came across a book for Krav Magra, the simple straight forward techniques caught my attention, while I will conduct my own research, can anyone online provide some first hand account of this martial art?

Krav maga and Aikido could not be more different. Krav maga is similar to Kenpo and Ninjutsu in that it is a straight forward combat art. Basically, it teaches you how to hurt people very badly, very quickly. Using any of the techniques in a bar fight will get you arrested. There is not a whole lot of attention to detail/form as there is in Karate. it's functional, brutal and efficient.

Aikido, on the other hand is designed mainly to de-escalate a fight, in my opinion. The techniques can be made deadly, of course, but the ultimate goal is not to kill or maim the enemy. I think it is similar to BJJ in that respect. You can use the techiniques without killing someone. Though, you will make them scream "UNCLE" quickly!
Krava maga is mainly designed as a military and anti-terrorist martial arts for the Israeli army. It is very, very serious stuff!

I was always suprised that Seagal became an action hero using Aikido. It's not really meant for those kinds of movies, however, I think Aikido is great for a lot of reasons. So is Krav Maga, but they are apples and oranges.

Expect learning locks and throws as the main ingredients of the lessons. Most techniques start off with the attacker lunging with a punch or grabbing you (usually by the wrist) and you'd be shown how to bring him into a position of submisssion, taking advantage of his weaknesses and restriction of joint mobility. Great art for bouncers, or for any fighter to have a knowledge and understanding of. You'll be suprised how much pain you can put someone in by hardly using any strengh at all and have them them under restraint and control. They train to a lesser extent (or maybe that was just my class) with the bokken and bo (wooden staff and wooden sword) for building chi.

Also expect sore back and wrists the first few sessions!

Funny that of the 4 examples you gave 3 actually are legitimately qualified.
Norris and Seagal were successful martial artists way before becoming actors. Vila was a licensed general contractor.
Just because these cats once cashed in on their skills, training etc. or because they're getting old, doesn't make them fake. It might even be that they weren't even the best, but then, who is?
