Speaking of paranoia? LOL sounds (to me) like he was scared of you... He let you see the deployment and the tool. Perhaps he expected you to be intimidated and didn't get the reaction he wanted?

I call it a test, you pass... Had you "froze up" or wet your pants he may have revealed further intent to rob or assault you?

I wasn't there but a quite neighborhood in broad daylight on a public street in plain sight... Hmmm... I have doubts. I think you scared him. Maybe that CRAZY look in your eye freaked him out and he was preparing to "defend" himself from you?

Yea you wont believe what just happened on my lunch break. I believe this thread and my paranoid mindset may have just saved me from being shanked. I was taking a lunchtime walk on a rather quiet street here in baltimore. I normally walk about an hour but today it was almost 90 minutes. Get this, I'm walking and another guy is walking towards me. I see him reach in his pocket for what I thought was a gun. He comes out with a very sharp folding knife and pops it open with that snapping wrist motion that some people mistake for a switch blade. I train with training knives all the time so my first reaction was to keep a cool calm head and just keep moving. I think the poor guys timing was off and he pulled it sooner that he wanted to. So, I keep moving and in my typical paranoid fashion I check over my shoulder. Damn, get this--he is checking over his shoulder at me. So I just keep moving trying to get as much distance as possible between us, but still checking over my shoulder. Get this, the guy is still checking over his shoulder. Finally, I knew I was out of harms way because of the distance; but I am now perplexed. What the F&^%k was that all about? Maybe he wanted to attack me but couldn't get up the courage? Of course there is. Being aware of everything around you in a 6 foot radius isn't paranoid, its survival. Humans have lost touch with our animal instincts. We can no longer use the five sense to do things like smell fear or hear a heartbeat's intent.

But there are things in us that do pick up on clues ... almost subliminally, and they warn us of something that just isn't right. Some call it intuition. Others call it a hunch. But most call it paranoia because they've been conditioned not to listen to their instincts. Most will only listen to their sight, but not the feeling that your brain delivers when something isn't right.

Always follow your instincts if they are pure. If you're prejudiced and you feel threatened because a black guy gets behind you in line for popcorn, then you might just be a bigot. If you've been recently raped or mugged, then your judgement might be a bit flawed due to the circumstances.

But if you're at an ATM at night, its perfectly fine to be on guard if someone comes up behind you. What's not OK is too feel relieved if its a hot girl or a older guy. Criminals set people up like that all the time.

What's most important is to trust you inner voice that tells you when something isn't right.

In nearly every instance, the person knew it was coming. They just hoped that it wouldn't. People like to believe that people outgrow that kinda thing or are to civilized to do it. But they feel the hostility before it even happens, but they feel paralyzed with fear to do anything about it.

So what does that tell you? Whenever you feel or even smell a hint of hostility, get ready from all sides. This doesn't mean that you have to go Rambo and start beating up people who haven't done anything yet. It simply means that you either leave quickly, or get ready for what may come. Put your back up against a wall and speak in nonthreatening gestures with your hands at shoulder height where they are ready to defend or attack if the situation calls for it.

Agreed. But then it is not really a street fight is it? More like someone getting punched and falling down. To my mind a fight involves at least two people engaging against each other.

Yea, I never bothered to read the Karate translation version. I've read it at least 15 times and come up with something different everytime.
