I just wanted to know what dewfences you guys use against takedowns and what you guys think is best and why? also if you can include who taught you or how you came up with it please let me and everyone else know if you want
Sprawl is one of the best defenses for takedowns. Any gym that does real grappling will have you work the sprawl. You kick your legs out of reach and collapse your body weight onto the neck or shoulders of the guy shooting in, giving you top position.
There are counters to the sprawl, so long as you stay on your toes in your shoot attempt and not on your knees.
Another way to defend a weak shot attempt is to negate the takedown with your hips, and drive their shoulders to the ground but the shot is usually done from too short of a distance or the shooter is off balance (head is not above center of balance).
I was also curious about how to defend against judo and other simaler systems like japanese Jujitsu. I was playing around with this one judo guy and from my opinion all things were going well for me in a little sparriing session and then he gat ahold of my are and shirt Bam! I hit the mat. Now I now a little ground work you need to now a days but I hit so hard i was out of breath now thats something i sort of wanted to understand better were counters to that aswell and also just plain all shoot for my legs tackles aswell also i noticed different styles of tackles like in rugby cause those guys take down really hard I play for 3 years i think i mad more injuries from that sport then any other.

Sounds like the first thing you should learn is how to fall properly. For one, never hold your breathe, do the exact opposite and exhale as much of the air as you can before you hit or as your being thrown. It takes practice, but you won't have the wind knocked out of then.
Not sure what the guy did by your description, so can't say how to defend it.
to add to tom yum's sprawl...be sure after you kick your legs out from underneath you, drive your hips into the groud pretty hard, (drive their nose right through the mat!).
also, underhooks, (wrap your arms under and around his armpits), overhooks, (less effective, but just wrap your hands around his upperbody just below the posterior deltiod area), and you can use your forearms on the "shooters" trapezius area to help prevent him from getting in deep on your legs or a clinch.
where did i learn these from...i dont remember, every wrestler and mma guy i train with knows them, they are really common defences.
ALSO, if you are just grappling, try dropping down to one knee. that throws alot of judo guys and even wrestlers off. if they rush you...you are all ready in a good firemans carry position.

do you guys who grapple ever attempt a side step along with any of the above mentioned moves, sprawl, arm on trap, etc? Or even just side step out of reach to setup for a kick or something? if so how successful is that?
If you can sprawl you must have sensed the move coming, and if you can sidestep and setup an attack right away - you should, right.

No. That won't work. You don't have that kind of time unless the guy starts his shot from across the room.

It can be done but a trained grappler won't give you that much time or space. what you're trying to prevent with the sprawl is his getting his hands behind your legs to off balance you to the rear. Stepping off the line of attack and redirecting his force and momentum into the ground is good against amatuers though or the bull rush type attacks... They often don't have enough time to even break their fall and will land face first.
There's more to it (the sprawl) than bumping your legs back out of reach, you should also simultaneously PUSH HARD (SHOVE) his head or shoulders down with both hands when he gets that close that low...
There are any number of sources for the details of a technique but a notable BJJ master(?) by the name of Santos, F. (5th dan) was one of the more recent players to share this tip.
A person who is said to be proficient in the arts is like a fool. Because of his foolishness in concerning himself with just one thing, he thinks of nothing else and thus becomes proficient. - Hagarkure

How about just lying down, since you are on the ground you won't have to worry about being taken down

I suspect that the judoka was setting you up for a throw. In other words don't have false confidence or be surprised it probably just seemed you were doing well.
The other part is you were throw but your questions is about takedown defense. TD defense will help if someone is shooting but it will not help for throws. Just trying to help you get the right advice for your questions.

There is no defense against JUDO!!! Except better Judo! You better learn some Ukemi...

Of course, you don't want to simply push straight down. That might have you committing too much weight in one direction and leave you face down yourself if he switches off to an outside single. You have to respond to the direction he's coming from/driving to. And you're better off sinking an overhook on the near side at least than putting both hands on top of him. More control & better position to respond to his adjustments.

Good point Mr. Ipon. In fact, if you show early on that you are quick to jump into a sprawl he may use that fact to feint you into position for a nice throw.
to conuter any throw, it is best no to get touched. If you get set up, drop your hips below his, pull on his hip, and rotate over until your pelvis is at a right angle to his. The you can lace his ankles or just break away.
As far takedown defense, watch Liddell!!!!! I think he is as good
as any1.
Actually i have been watching alot of Mirko cro cop fights and he seems to do it better then anyone maybe even Liddle and he side steps alot and he is very succesful. When it came to the Judoka he was a black belt 3 degree in the sparring match i took him very seriously but I came in and he slipped a punch (hook) to my knowledge at the time I did noy know he knew boxing until he told me afterwards lucky me. I should have been more prepared for it my fault.
