  • hand speed

Sorry if this seems like a dumb question, but I have been very curious for
years. Is there a world record for hand speed? I know many people think Bruce Lee was the quickest, but Lee said that Steve Saunders, the teacher of Jim Kelly at the dojo in ETD, was the fastest. My instructor says that a boxer named Prince Naseem Hamed is about the fastest man today. Any opinions? Could Ali really jab at over 100 mph?

I would like to hear from the students of Tommy Cruthers on this one (sorry if I have mispelled his name). TC seems to have great speed.

From the JKD perspective, speed is not just the ability fo move your hands fast, it comes also from a sence of timing and distance. With the later two, a person with naturaly slow hands can move with incredable speed. For that reason I think it may not be all that helpfull to judge a person on how fast they can twitch that muscle.

I posted a thread a while ago asking for experiences with Tommy, the only person who kindly replied with his training experiences with Mr Carruthers was Michael Wright. You know, the touchy guy from the money grabbing, certificate printing, religious cult? Bearing in mind you spend all your time on here insulting the guy, his instructor, and talking shit about his art, I wouldn't be expecting a response anytime soon.

I have not insulted MW yet, but he does keep pushing. In regard to TC, I saw your quiry, But I have no experiance with him so I did not feel qualified to respond.

One thing I do know about TC though is that he has taken the time and truble to look up and tain with a number of Bruce lee's students. And I do respect that.

Keeps pushing what, a point of view different to yours? How dare he! Are you getting ready with your big insults? Ha ha, oh Im sure MW is trembling in his boots, tough guy!

I've been reading your posts and you're on this dellusioned campaign to convince everyone that you are the last word in JKD. I mean who the **** are you anyway? All we know is you train with some cowboy in Oakland that no one has ever heard of, and you come on here insulting men like Dan Inosanto (and don't waste my time telling me you respect him). You just can't see how full of shit your posts are, and I can't decide whether you are blind, scizophrenic, or just plain fucking stupid. Whatever it is, I wish you'd do us all a favour and shut the **** up.

I have never even met Dan Inosanto, I just think you are full of shit and epitomize everything you criticize in your preachings to others.

Notice how the poster never says what it is that I supposedly said to insult Dan Inosanto. He, and others in his group just keep repeating that I have insulted their Sifu. They use abusive language, and clame that I am using abusive language.

One thing that they don't want to talk about is the issue. This thread was about hand speed. But this group just wants to attack and attack. I do not understand where they are coming from, except that they do not want me on here because I have expressed the view, in another thread, that JKD is an original art developed by Bruce and inspired by Wing Chung, Boxing and Fencing. That is historically accurate. But it somehow offends their beliefs. And they do not want anyone to say something that offends their beliefs. Frankly I am about fed up with the narrow-mindedness and abusive tactics of these people.

By the by, I have never said I was "the last word in JKD." I am just a student trying to learn more. There is a lot to learn.

Ahh, the martyr speech, looking out to the crowd for someone to rescue you. I dont need to quote anything, that's the thing about Internet forums chum, everyone reads your words with their own two eyes. Let's see how many friends your contributions have bought you.

                      So long.

I think the thing with hand speed is that the speed has to be realistic. What i mean by this is id measure speed as the number of punches landed in a given time, with full impact, not pretend hit and against at least a moving target but i suppose static would be reasonable.
But you have to land them fully. Its all very well doing some very fast hand movements but in reality landing a punch sucks the speed and "flow" out of your movements, slowing you right down. On top of that it has to be punches that would really hurt, not just simply making full contact with a limp wristed attack.
I dont think we really know how fast alot of people are as we dont get to see this.

Moving someones arms quickly in the air against pretend attacks takes far less time to prepare than the above.

and remember speed is only one component, slow powerful punchers can take out faster guys if there is a big power difference.
Speed does not equal power if its at the sacrifice of body mechanics, which it often is.

This guy for instance we know can punch fast in the air and irl. Although you can see the speed decrease alot when shots have to actually land, they are also slightly different skills in my opinion
