Woah, I wasn't bashing Dan Insonato - I was just responding to Fenwick who claimed
'IMO Dan Inosanto is the most important and influential teacher in American martial arts, and he has been for at least 20 years, and he probably would be so if there had been no Bruce Lee. ..'
I was just saying that there are many more important martial artists in the world today.
Dan Insonato is good and I am not taking anything away from him but if you're going to say that someone is that good, you should be able to back it up
Kevin Chan is also good, but I would never dream of saying he is the best in the world. I certainly feel that he has given me more than any other teacher I have trained under and that I think that he is one of the most underrated martial artists around.
And yes it was a world poll. But polls aren't always correct.

Really? I never heard of Kevin Chan until you posted your website. I find it highly doubtful that it was a world poll. . . . .
And why must you continue this attack on Dan Inosanto?

Once again, I must know why would an American be ranked among British martial artists?Originally posted by Red Rum View PostYeah. So? What are you arguing? He has still lived off the Bruce Lee name. And he isn't that great - he was ranked below my Sifu in a martial arts poll in Martial Arts Illustrated!! I doubt his influence would have spread without Bruce Lee

I would highlight the word arguably - after all, he was a Judo guy. Or that is what he was claiming in the articleOriginally posted by fenwick99 View PostBTW the "stuntman" who beat Bruce was Judo Gene LeBell, arguably the greatest fighter of the 20th century. Woah woah woah. Bruce Lee purist vs. mischevious devils.....
Okay let me bring some clarification. Bruce Lee always said that he was nowhere near as good a martial artist as many of the people back in Hong Kong. He only completed a short term in wing chun (ie he barely knew the second form). I understand that he went back to Yip Man later to ask to be taught the final forms, but Yip Man refused. I believe he was also taught Mantis and other elements of fighting
When he came to America he found that the 'traditional' wing chun that he learnt fell apart as it did not account for grapples/clinches or long distance fighting.
One account tells how a Judo guy/stunt co-ordinator came onto the set of the Green Hornet and carried Bruce in a lock over his shoulder, mocking him and making fun of him. So bruce realised that there was a gaping difference between how Westerners fought and how kung fu practitioners trained
He formed Jeet Kune Do in an attempt to accomodate the principles of wing chun into a more realistic format. Some would say he failed dramatically. Others would say he did a good job.
When you look at the people it has produced - Rick Young, Dan Insonato etc then you have to admit that he did okay
And please remember that no-one is flawless in martial arts. There was a time during their training when Fedor, Royce Gracie, Chuck Liddell and yes even Brucie got their ass* handed to them

opinion
"be formless, shapless like water".
My life is down the damn toilet nowdays, so with nothing better to do then b****, I'll give my two cents here:
Bruce Lee a man of passion, myth, legend and ability.
Was Bruce Lee an amazing fighter? Some believe yes, others No I believe he just lucky. I dont think he had a big head about himself, nor do I think he was trying to be the best in a sense of saying "I'm better then all of you" though at that time maybe he was right?
All this BS about Bruce Lee needs to stop, "could he beat so and so" who cares? Bruce Lee was an outstanding martial artist who changed the martial arts community for the better but also for the worst. Let a martial artist instructor RIP.
FOR *OD SAKES!!!!!! LET HIM REST... THE MAN'S BEEN DEAD FOR OVER 40 YEARS!!!!!!
P.S. WHEN THE HELL DID THIS SECTION GET POLITICAL??

re:
As an aside, I love arts like hapkido, hwa rang do, and kuk sool won, and even tang soo do. TKD is good depending on the teacher, but it is too slow for me, biomechanically.
I will try to get my nephews in these arts if they show an interest........
. Two problems, however: many adults are too stiff to do any Korean style, and there is the issue of what Sijo DeMile of Wing Chun Do calls
"the toolbox." In other words, your CNS will only
allow you to get good at 5-10 techniques, maybe 15 at most, and these are what you will rely upon when faced with a real situation. It is easy to decide on your toolbox tools if you study an art that has only 5, 35, or 108 techniques. But some styles like certain versions of hapkido actully brag about having 4,000 techniques or 10,000 techniques. What not go 4 a million?
How many variations are there of a str8 punch: Let see: vertical, diagonal, or
horizontal fist. Elbow down or up. Start from a get-set position or from anywhere. Supinate the wrist, or not. There are only so many ways to move the body, and the CNS can only automatize a finite # of moves, unless you are a great talent like
Sijo Bruce Lee or Senior GM Edmund Keoluha Parker, Sr.
