Kicking High without warning

    headshots are overrated. the body is usually much easier to reach and can finish people pretty effectively. just land a good body shot and u will see your opponent slow down considerably and his mobility starts suffering. this is when u can use footwork and pick them apart by coming in and out of range with combos.


    try using lead hand backfists to his head to distract him, then landing a sidekick into his body. aim for the ribs if possible. also when striking to the body, strike above or below the bellybutton. thats were the good spots are

      I dont do any Tae Kwon Doe, but in my MMA/Kickboxing I've always found with less experienced people (and im guilty of this too I just capitalize on it for other people).

      When people through thai leg kicks, or body kicks I will drop my hand and check it with my leg.

      Throw a leg kick, and as others have mentioned before throw your high kick right after.

      Or throw your leg kick then punch em in the head, thats what I do cause I cant kick high effectively cause im not very flexible.

      To see if their gonna drop their hand just throw a few leg kicks out there, and if they do it there gona keep doign it, until you throw a leg kick right cross/hook at them.

        If you need advice for a tournament setting mine is this:

        The very nanosecond that hand goes out of the way or whatever strike as quick as you can. This catches lotsa people off guard who tend to step back and size you up for a few seconds. The expression is priceless!

          Not only that, the "sizing up" can often be a cover for being exhausted. I know I've done it at a few points in my life, and I can also sometimes tell when others do it.

          When you see them slow down, and they're not counterattacking effectively, and they only try to step away, you've got them on the run. Bore in and let the beating commence.

          Bottomline, train up for endurance and good habits(like not dropping your hands). I used to never drop my hands but the new kids kept going for body shots so I lowered em a bit. I got my helmet grazed with a back hook kick about a few minutes later. It was a solid well thrown one too, and if it had connected I probably would have been done for the day. And counterattack drills are a pretty good base. It's pretty funny to watch and see someone use the same counterattack technique twice and connect against a fatigued opponent.

            Another thing, check the rules...a lot of TKD tournaments don't allow any intentional hits below the hogu.

            I use body shots(punches) to get them to start looking low instead, then use body shot feints to set up the high hits.
