Y'all realize this thread is more than two years old?!?

Personal lifestyle changes since my first response and I'm no longer studying TKD formally. But I still do several forms early each morning as a type of stretching warm-up before (or sometimes in lieu of) strength training.

It also calms my mind and "centers" me somewhat.

Now I study the ITF Chang Hun Ru, but my background is with Songahm and I'll study some of the Black Belt level WTF material.

Started with Isshin Ryu forms, then Shotokan, Tang Soo Do, ITF/Oh Do Kwan, Kukkiwon Palgwe and Yudanja Poomsae, and now, just Taegeuk and Yudanja Poomsae.

My school works in pairs for gup levels (taeguek & palgwe, with sa-ju-jireugi for white), and then the WTF black belt set (koryo, keumgang, etc.)

Kids only get the taeguek, until they're about 12 or so, or reach about blue or red (when they start showing that they can handle the next set). Adults get both.

I honestly think not teaching the palgwe forms (at least in a WTF style) does a disservice, since they contain all the techniques that students should be learning. Also, the black belt forms are much more like the palgwe forms than the taegeuk...

As far as 'dumbing down' forms... what the crap? change the forms so they're easier?? may as well not study. you want to learn, do it right. dumbing down only makes for dumb students.
