My school works in pairs for gup levels (taeguek & palgwe, with sa-ju-jireugi for white), and then the WTF black belt set (koryo, keumgang, etc.)

Kids only get the taeguek, until they're about 12 or so, or reach about blue or red (when they start showing that they can handle the next set). Adults get both.

I honestly think not teaching the palgwe forms (at least in a WTF style) does a disservice, since they contain all the techniques that students should be learning. Also, the black belt forms are much more like the palgwe forms than the taegeuk...

As far as 'dumbing down' forms... what the crap? change the forms so they're easier?? may as well not study. you want to learn, do it right. dumbing down only makes for dumb students.

Started with Isshin Ryu forms, then Shotokan, Tang Soo Do, ITF/Oh Do Kwan, Kukkiwon Palgwe and Yudanja Poomsae, and now, just Taegeuk and Yudanja Poomsae.

Personal lifestyle changes since my first response and I'm no longer studying TKD formally. But I still do several forms early each morning as a type of stretching warm-up before (or sometimes in lieu of) strength training.

It also calms my mind and "centers" me somewhat.

Well I dont know, you should have asked General Choi THE FOUNDER of TKD before he died since he created the forms and the way we do them. If you're going to do the ITF forms you should do them properly, any other way is a poor copy of the real thing. Your instructor should simply choose another set of forms that does not incorporate SINE WAVE if he doesnt want to teach that principle. If you are not using sine wave you are the minority, a million other people doing ITF forms are using sine wave.

Now that I've said hat, I dont actually have any allegiance to sine wave myself, I do it, I teach it, but only becuase it is part of the art I am associated with. I have no loyalty to it out of belief that it actually helps in generating power any more than I am loyal to any other principle that is said to generate more power since there are several different ones. Kinda like religion, I just cant pick one and assume its the true way.

Nothing to do with TKD.... just was checking the internet and posting as I watched the military take over my city on TV..... that stuff doesn't happen back in Ottawa Canada heh. I was being funny about it not being boring..... dont you think a little more boring would be preferable than worrying about getting imprisoned or shot by military gone crazy?
