  • Is TKD really that bad?

I have read some topics, and they have made me sad . Should I still join the one in my town?
The name of the do jang is Tiger Kims, located in Closter , New Jeresy. I heard that this place is famous because of the 2 sons of Master kim's, cause of there work in hollywood...I wanted to join since I was very young in Korea, now that I moved to the US, I did notice that they teach it a lot more different. They teach with no violence, as when I watched in korea all the kids were getting either yelled at or getting hit to do somthing correctly. I would insist the masters to hit, Im used to getting beat, because of my father. I think it will help greatly.
As I'am young, kids in my grade with high testie levels always are picking fights lol, so yeah I do get involved in to most of them.

And would it be ok if I learned the forms and moves, and practice them at home as well? I really want to take this serious and learn hard. I lift weights and punch the bag days a week, I think joining TKD will help my body greatly as I see the students doing a lot of excersices continuously. So should I join the one in my town?

    Thank you very much

Well even if the sons of tiger Kim or Tiger Kim Himself was a great fighter. You will not be instructed by Tiger Kim or his sons. I like to stay away from chain Dojangs. But ultimately you need to go to the school and evaluate the training and the qualifications of the instructor(s). You really can't make an informaed decision without knowing these factors.

I checked out your link. All I can say is AWESOME!

Tekkenryu jujitsu looks really sound; a compilation of effective traditional martial art techniques. Cool that he is also into helping others with self-improvement.

          That's a gem allright.

I have some of the tapes. It really is the type of thing that can be learned from video. Never met the guys, but have spoken to them on the old Close Combat forum (now defunct). Theres more of them here -

              Tiger Kim Dojang

              Dear Sir,

The Kim Twins are magnificent martial artists. Their father (I believe has passed away some 8 years ago) was a strong man, a great instructor, and a fabulous hard style Taekwon-Do practitioner.

Unfortunately, as stated previously, these facts do not ensure a sound training program. You should not be to quick to write off the school; however, you should evaluate the dojang (or any school) before joining!

Train hard, live peacefully, fight hard...

              TAEKWON!

Hey man I live in NJ and if you want a real good school for tae kwon do or tekkon you should go to USA Martial Arts Colledge in Ridgewood NJ. Our Grandmaster here lived in korea when he was younger so he trains us the way i think u want.

                      Nah

TKD is not as bad as many post in these threads. It depends what you want ut of it and why you join. Do you want to compete or do you want to do Self Defense. Competing in TKD is good for conditioning and hardening the body. I do not know what these people think when they call WTF sparring "soft". They obviously never sparred or fought someone of good quality.

TKD has almost everything except a ground game. We use many arm bars and joint manipulation, throws, knees, elbows in out self defense, but our main weapons are our legs. People think the TKD people can not use their hands or that their hands are slow and soft.

I suppose that is our greatest self defense because when you opponent learns that we study TKD, they automatically think that our legs are our biggest assets, leaving them open for whatever.

Just remember when these guys who talk of grappling as the tell all do all of martial art fighting, remember that they have to come to you to get you to the ground. If you practice hard and take it serious and not just in it for the belt, TKD will make you kick as fast as most people punch with 5 times the power.

Herbert Perez was a World champion in the early 90's and he won with only roundhouse kicks that were clocked at 120mph and he could kick 135 kicks a minute at and average of 85mph. You take that speed and add leg and hip strength it will equall a devistating strike that will break anything in its way.

Herb is awesome, but I myself can kick a bag waist level 115 times a minute with an ave speed of 69 mph. My fastest kick was clocked at 96 mph. Herb's speed might not be reachable, but mine is. I am 30 years old and been training WTF for 12 years.

Finding a Dojang is the trickest part in TKD so research well. If you are in the USA, remember that kids and teens are babied and therefore Masters can not train them like they do in Korea for fear of lawsuit.
