Ah, well TKDGuy, i think next time you should break that combo with a small push kick the the guys butt when he spins for the hook kick. Just enough to get him off balance or make him stop his kick and follow up with a roundhouse or axe kick and turn the combo on him. No one should EVER start offense with any spinning kick especially since most WTF trains heavy counters.

Hook kicks are easy to defend against when used as an offense. Simply slide step backwards wait for him get reach 90% of his rotation and kick duration and blast him with a round house. If you need to bend your base leg to get a farther reach and then continue on your attack. NEVER DUCK from any kick as it will leave you off balance and back pedalling. That is a position you never want to be in. The secret to success in WTF is the ability to get the hell out of the way and counter or have a faster roundhouse. lol

Well, I've had a black belt in TKD since I was 15 (started when I was 9). Our gym was WTF, and we never used pads until right up to a tournament - to simulate the conditions. We engaged in lots of interesting sparring sessions:

      - Olympic sparring (pads)
      - Light-contact sparring (no pads)
      - Full-contact sparring (no pads)
      - 1 vs multiple persons sparring
      - 2 vs multiple persons sparring
      - unarmed vs weapons sparring

My instructor was very self-defense conscious, so there was always an emphasis on techniques like "hit-n-run." I also had friends from rival schools who had interesting sparring sessions. The point is that every gym has its own approach. To say that all WTF schools are like this and all ITF schools are like that is ignorant.

i agree with pstevens we rarely use pads to spar and if we do it is nothin but head gear gloves and foot pads. also i just fought the kid again and used the push kick to get in close and just punched him untill he fell over. it turned out he had very little boxing experience and i could beat him fairly easily with my fists.
