    Michael, again... You're talking about specifics here, where I was merely illustrating a point. When you allow an attacker to get close enough, they're within a range that MOST combat specialist will tell you, "action will always best reaction."

    The only time I plan my strategy is on the mat or in the ring. Anything outside, I depend on instincts and ability.

      Great post, I've been trying to articulate to people for awhile that combat sport and traditional MA are different beasts. The fatal flaw of every self defense system is that you can't engage in the event that you train for so it is hard to measure performance. With sport MA you engage in the event every time you train so performance is easy to judge. This is not a knock on traditional MA, just a statement of fact. I stopped training for self defense years ago. Triaining in a style that I can actually measure my performance in the real event is much more fun for me.
