You'd be made most welcome, as long as you only come back after you die......

Not to get back on topic or anything, but what do you expect to find in a self defense book, Bri?

I'm pretty sure it wasn't their intention to present the book just as a list of reactions to an attacker.

Like I already said, I wouldn't want to rely on any of the moves in that book that deal with weapons. But I didn't see much wrong with the other moves. Would you find better self defense in other martial arts?

Yes you would. Go here - www.close-combat-videos.com

This is basic and brutal. It will also give you a chance. The Gracie "Self Defence" will get you a trip to the hospital.

I know! The Gracies should have done a book on firearms and muay thai.

              HELLO FOLKS:
i just wanted to join in this lively disscussion. so excuse my spellin' and my lack of one o them there lexicons (ya know the little green irishmen!) well i got agree with some of my anti gracie compatriots, i went to gracie seminar a couple of years before they hit the ufc and i must say most of their techniques are borrowed from judo, college wrestling, and some run of the mill jujitsu. it is somewhat effective for the ground but it reallt doesn't seem to be a total art. and my best buddy who is a former drill seargent in the us army and a combatives instructor and a 2 dan kempo and a 1 st dan in judo, was livid that the army was going to an all bjj format. they neglect to use anything that would work against multiple attackers. and lets face it in a low intensity urban conflicts that is going to be impotant don't yah think? i read an article several years ago by rickson gracie in which he described a tactic he used in a multi opponent encounter and i question the validity of the encounter as well as the techniques he claimed to use. grappling is hard to do when you are chokin' one guy and gettin' your a## beat by the other! so i must say this entire debate is academic until you try to apply one of the techniques on the street. at which point any technique only has mabe a 50% chance of working. mjust my two cents....

I just want to reassert my view of the Gracies.

They brought the martial arts into the 21st Century with their groundfighting methods. We all owe them a debt.

But that book whiffs a bit.

It whiffs almost as much as the folds of skin under Spanky's breasts.

                    Almost.

Breathless, what should they have chosen for multiple attackers?

                              mr poopy

this is only my opinion and experience, so here goes. while i worked as a bouncer at the rose in muskogee ok 1991- 1994. i had the misfortune of finding my self in a encounter or two that involved multiple opponents. at the time i had a good grounding in boxing, judo, ryukyu kempo, tae kwon do and freestyle wrestling. and i found the techniques of boxing (bobbig and weaving for example) and some greco roman standing tie ups to be the most useful, not mention getting the hell away and waiting for back up or using a chair or anything else i could find. the one thing i did agree with rickson about was the idea of "keep moving". i also used a few tae kwon do and muay thai kicks on a couple of occassions with reasonably good success. i stand by my original statement the gracie techniques are marginally effective against two or more opponents.
tony blauers (i think it is tony blauer) mass attack is a reasonable facsimile of what happens in a multi opponent encounter. to be honest i 've seen hundreds of martial instructional videos that try to deal with the multi attack scenario, as well as an instructor or two of mine, and they all seem to lack one ingredient realism. its like a kung fu movie one guy steps up and they apply a technique and then another. this was the case in a bjj (??instructor) dvd i saw too! mr poopy when fist feet and bottles and cue balls and spit start flyin' no one stands and waits to counter (at least not anyone who doesn't get their a## kicked). and if you hit the ground you better have bc/bs or a pre arranged funreal. "We wanna put the fun back in funeral(SP?)!" nightcourt NBC.
