I don't have a problem with chokes being taught as a SD technique. The problem is people tend to be too casual with chokes and do not realize how dangerous they are. People do not "tap" in real situations they panic, you chokes on the carotid or trachea do not make people neccessary just passout they can very easily be the primary or secondary cause of death. so if this is a life or death situation hey do what you have to dobut just a fight well if would not be my first choice.
