To clarify a little: BJJ is more than just sport(gi and no-gi) or self-defense. It also includes a branch developed in Brazil called Vale Tudo. Vale Tudo was basically a type of fighting perfected in challenge matches and other no-rules type of contest in Brazil over the last 75-80 years. It includes BJJ subs, takedowns, and strikes of many kinds (punches, kicks, elbows, knees) delivered from standing, clinching, and ground control positions taught in BJJ.

For example: A guy who clinches, takes you down, gets side mount, and armbars you is doing sport BJJ.

A guy who low kicks you, clinches, takes you down, side mounts you, throws knees to your head and ribs, then armbars you and kicks your face in with his heel is doing a form of BJJ known as Vale Tudo.

Vale Tudo is not a style, its a competition. Its where Pride and UFC came from. So to train Vale Tudo, is like saying training for UFC. There really is not a set group of things you will learn. Most Vale Tudo guys in the past learned a little Judo, BJJ, Luta Livre (Freeform fighting, its from Brazil and I am not very familiar with it), and Thai boxing. Ask the instructor about what he is teaching and get him to be specific. If he cannot find a new school.
