    wrestling is not grappling.
grappling involves striking, joint locks and chokes. All of these are illegal in wrestling.
secondly, wrestling can be applied in a fight. But by going to a martial arts center you will learn takedowns PLUS how to finish off your opponent instead of just pinning him. I am not arguing the validity of wrestling. But, am simply saying that if self-defense is the goal, do something else.

Ok, you obviously need to look up the definition of grappling. You also don't have to explain grappling to me as I have quite an involved background in it. You really seem to have a limited view of things do you even have any experience outside of your art?

        Yes
look.....dude.....i have made some good points in the realities of wrestling vs martial arts while you on the other hand struggle, gasping for air in your own dogmaticism. Seriously go away. Go back to playing wwf or ninja vs samurai in the back yard of your trailer park or go play dungeons and dragons with your little friends or go practice your tai chi.
just dont bother me with your lame attempts at validation of a sport that doesnt apply to a real situation wherein an experienced martial artist is involved.
either way, I am done with you, so......shoo shoo little man

Ummm...wrestling is the very defination of grappling. TDs, throws and yes some locks or "illegal moves" many wrestlers learn. Boxing is a sport as well but I see you see the value of western boxing in your combination style.

Any style that adresses SD under the rules (or any rules) of their respective sport will not be that effective. karate, BJJ, judo wushu, etc. Does wrestling has street effectiveness certainly it called TD or throw to GNP (ground N Pound). I can vouch for it I've used it.

No Flame dude, but just becuase you have met a few wrestlers does not speak for all wrestlers. There are may people that train and do not understand how to apply a combat art into a combat situation. Wrestler learn a lot of techniques, some that you see in judo and BJJ. but that does not mean everyone understand how to put it together. It has always ben a silly notion to me when I have seen BJJ vs Wrestling with BJJ rules (choke/submission) even some of these great wrestlers, of course they are doomed to fail;ure before they start ........ they don't submit. What you see is the wrestler get the TD (maybe throw) uncontested. When wrestlers start applying submission different story.

In fact, why is this issue even comming up. The guy said he was interested in taking wrestling, not should I wrestle or take a MA (which he did for 9 years)

MY EmptyHands: generally speaking, you will be behind most of the guys wrestling as far as skill. But never say never, if it is something that intereste you try you may suprise yourself. I could only say the worst thing that could happen is that you get in better shape and learn balace and ground control which will always be an advantage to you.

                        wresting is great

I am not a wrestler myself but i have friends who are hardcore into. Like 1st and 2nd in the state in their class....

but anyway on to whats important. Wresting is a martial art in a sense. In my opinion wresting is not a good form of self defence but it can be very useful in self defence situations.

If you want to wrestle be prepared to work hard. In my school wrestlers starve themselves. During practice they have little to no water and for dinner they suck on orange juice ice cubes...no joke.

Try it out. You have nothing to lose, it can only be a positive experience in my opinion.

                          buuut....wrestling is a sport.
calling it a martial art is like calling tae bo a martial art or soccer for that matter

Lots of catching up to do my friend. You're going to be up against hardcore wrestlers who have been doing it since they could walk (seriously). Just like anything else you wish to get good it, it's going to take tons of time, patience, practice, and perseverance.

As far as preparation? Be prepared to get in the best shape of your life - if your school is anywhere serious about its wrestling program, you'll be doing cardio till you drop, then do some more. Prepare yourself with a great work ethic and you'll be set.

                            Best regards,

I would definately reccommend going for it. It will probably be one of the toughest things you have ever done. Football doesn't even almost compare. Even if you wrestle this year and never make it varsity you will be set to go take bjj and dominate because you can control them.
