    • BJJ is what happens to Judo when it is forced to survive in Brazil. The stuff works. Is it a "new" art? No. Nothing is. Was it innovated, explored, and developed by the Gracies? You bet it was. If they can experience success for their contribution--hey, great. They did something special.

Here's the bad news about BJJ--it's complex and takes a lot of really hard training time to master it. That BJJ blackbelt comes from some serious toil. Those guys have my respect. We all have a tendency to want to be like the best right? Well, start training when you're born under the innovators of the art or train your living a*s off for about 10 years. No thanks. I have to work to pay the bills.

Here's the good news about BJJ--a little goes a long way. See, BJJ loses its complexity when you train for NHB fighting--streetfighting. Why? Because strikes take away the effectiveness of many BJJ tournament stuff--you know all those fancy open guards and subtle locks and twists and stuff. So, one strategy would be to learn the basic stuff and get really good at it and forget about the complex pure grappling stuff. That works for many of us. Learn a good striking art, and that's all you need. Develope your own martial art that works for you. You can even give yourself a belt! So what is the truth about BJJ? It's really right in front of all of us. You just have to study it to see it.
